Guru Ram Das Ji (1534–1581) was the fourth Sikh Guru. Born Bhai Jetha in Lahore, he was known for his humility and devotion.
Key Contributions
- Founded the city of Ramdaspur, which later became Amritsar — the holiest city in Sikhism
- Began excavation of the sacred pool (Amrit Sarovar) that would later surround the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple)
- Composed the Lavan — the four wedding hymns still recited in every Sikh marriage ceremony (Anand Karaj)
- Established the Masand system for collecting community offerings
Bani in SGGS Guru Ram Das Ji composed 679 hymns in 30 raags, including the beloved Lavan in Raag Suhi.
