Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (SGGS) is the eternal, living Guru of the Sikhs. It is a unique scripture in world religion — a living Guru in the form of the Word of God (Gurbani).

Compilation The fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, compiled the Adi Granth in 1604 and installed it at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Guru Gobind Singh Ji added the bani of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and declared the scripture the eternal Guru in 1708.

Reverence Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is treated with the same reverence as a living Guru. It resides on a throne (Manji Sahib) under a canopy (Palki), and a Sevadaar (attendant) waves a Chaur Sahib (fly whisk) as a sign of respect.
