ਪਾਪ ਪਥਰ ਤਰਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
pāp pathar taran n jāī .
Sin is a stone which does not float.
ਭਉ ਬੇੜਾ ਜੀਉ ਚੜਾਊ ॥
bhau bērā jīu charāū .
So let the Fear of God be the boat to carry your soul across.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵੈ ਕਾਹੂ ॥੪॥੨॥
kah nānak dēvai kāhū .4.2.
Says Nanak, rare are those who are blessed with this Boat. ||4||2||

ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਸਵਾਣੀ ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਦੁਇ ਲੇਖ ਪਏ ॥
karanī kāgad man masavānī burā bhalā dui lēkh paē .
Actions are the paper, and the mind is the ink; good and bad are both recorded upon it.
ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਚਲਾਏ ਤਿਉ ਚਲੀਐ ਤਉ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਤੁ ਹਰੇ ॥੧॥
jiu jiu kirat chalāē tiu chalīai tau gun nāhī ant harē .1.
As their past actions drive them, so are mortals driven. There is no end to Your Glorious Virtues, Lord. ||1||
ਚਿਤ ਚੇਤਸਿ ਕੀ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਵਰਿਆ ॥
chit chētas kī nahī bāvariā .
Why do you not keep Him in your consciousness, you mad man?
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਲਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har bisarat tērē gun galiā .1. rahāu .
Forgetting the Lord, your own virtues shall rot away. ||1||Pause||
ਜਾਲੀ ਰੈਨਿ ਜਾਲੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਹੂਆ ਜੇਤੀ ਘੜੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਤੇਤੀ ॥
jālī rain jāl din hūā jētī gharī phāhī tētī .
The night is a net, and the day is a net; there are as many traps as there are moments.
ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਫਾਸਹਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਮੂੜੇ ਕਵਨ ਗੁਣੀ ॥੨॥
ras ras chōg chugah nit phāsah shūtas mūrē kavan gunī .2.
With relish and delight, you continually bite at the bait; you are trapped, you fool - how will you ever escape? ||2||
ਕਾਇਆ ਆਰਣੁ ਮਨੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੋਹਾ ਪੰਚ ਅਗਨਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹੀ ॥
kāiā āran man vich lōhā panch agan tit lāg rahī .
The body is a furnace, and the mind is the iron within it; the five fires are heating it.
ਕੋਇਲੇ ਪਾਪ ਪੜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਜਲਿਆ ਸੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਚਿੰਤ ਭਈ ॥੩॥
kōilē pāp parē tis ūpar man jaliā sannhī chint bhaī .3.
Sin is the charcoal placed upon it, which burns the mind; the tongs are anxiety and worry. ||3||
ਭਇਆ ਮਨੂਰੁ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਨੇਹਾ ॥
bhaiā manūr kanchan phir hōvai jē gur milai tinēhā .
What was turned to slag is again transformed into gold, if one meets with the Guru.
ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਓਹੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਟਸਿ ਦੇਹਾ ॥੪॥੩॥
ēk nām anmrit ōh dēvai tau nānak trisatas dēhā .4.3.
He blesses the mortal with the Ambrosial Name of the One Lord, and then, O Nanak, the body is held steady. ||4||3||

ਬਿਮਲ ਮਝਾਰਿ ਬਸਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਲ ਪਦਮਨਿ ਜਾਵਲ ਰੇ ॥
bimal majhār basas niramal jal padaman jāval rē .
In the pure, immaculate waters, both the lotus and the slimy scum are found.
ਪਦਮਨਿ ਜਾਵਲ ਜਲ ਰਸ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਦੋਖ ਨਹੀ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
padaman jāval jal ras sangat sang dōkh nahī rē .1.
The lotus flower is with the scum and the water, but it remains untouched by any pollution. ||1||
ਦਾਦਰ ਤੂ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਰੇ ॥
dādar tū kabah n jānas rē .
You frog, you will never understand.
ਭਖਸਿ ਸਿਬਾਲੁ ਬਸਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਲ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨ ਲਖਸਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhakhas sibāl basas niramal jal anmrit n lakhas rē .1. rahāu .
You eat the dirt, while you dwell in the immaculate waters. You know nothing of the ambrosial nectar there. ||1||Pause||
ਬਸੁ ਜਲ ਨਿਤ ਨ ਵਸਤ ਅਲੀਅਲ ਮੇਰ ਚਚਾ ਗੁਨ ਰੇ ॥
bas jal nit n vasat alīal mēr chachā gun rē .
You dwell continually in the water; the bumble bee does not dwell there, but it is intoxicated with its fragrance from afar.
ਚੰਦ ਕੁਮੁਦਨੀ ਦੂਰਹੁ ਨਿਵਸਸਿ ਅਨਭਉ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਰੇ ॥੨॥
chand kumudanī dūrah nivasas anabhau kāran rē .2.
Intuitively sensing the moon in the distance, the lotus bows its head. ||2||
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਖੰਡੁ ਦੂਧਿ ਮਧੁ ਸੰਚਸਿ ਤੂ ਬਨ ਚਾਤੁਰ ਰੇ ॥
anmrit khand dūdh madh sanchas tū ban chātur rē .
The realms of nectar are irrigated with milk and honey; you think you are clever to live in the water.
ਅਪਨਾ ਆਪੁ ਤੂ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਸਿ ਪਿਸਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਿਉ ਰੇ ॥੩॥
apanā āp tū kabah n shōdas pisan prīt jiu rē .3.
You can never escape your own inner tendencies, like the love of the flea for blood. ||3||
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਸੰਗਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਜਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਗਮ ਸਾਸ ਸੁਨੇ ॥
pandit sang vasah jan mūrakh āgam sās sunē .
The fool may live with the Pandit, the religious scholar, and listen to the Vedas and the Shaastras.
ਅਪਨਾ ਆਪੁ ਤੂ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਸਿ ਸੁਆਨ ਪੂਛਿ ਜਿਉ ਰੇ ॥੪॥
apanā āp tū kabah n shōdas suān pūsh jiu rē .4.
You can never escape your own inner tendencies, like the crooked tail of the dog. ||4||
ਇਕਿ ਪਾਖੰਡੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਰਾਚਹਿ ਇਕ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਰੇ ॥
ik pākhandī nām n rāchah ik har har charanī rē .
Some are hypocrites; they do not merge with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Some are absorbed in the Feet of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਰੇ ॥੫॥੪॥
pūrab likhiā pāvas nānak rasanā nām jap rē .5.4.
The mortals obtain what they are predestined to receive; O Nanak, with your tongue, chant the Naam. ||5||4||

ਪਤਿਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਅਸੰਖ ਹੋਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗ ॥
patit punīt asankh hōh har charanī man lāg .
Countless sinners are sanctified, attaching their minds to the Feet of the Lord.
ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗ ॥੧॥
athasath tīrath nām prabh nānak jis masatak bhāg .1.
The merits of the sixty-eight places of pilgrimage are found in God's Name, O Nanak, when such destiny is inscribed upon one's forehead. ||1||

O friends and companions, so puffed up with pride,
ਸੁਣਿ ਸਹ ਕੀ ਇਕ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਹੇਲੀ ॥੧॥
sun sah kī ik bāt suhēlī .1.
listen to this one joyous story of your Husband Lord. ||1||
ਜੋ ਮੈ ਬੇਦਨ ਸਾ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖਾ ਮਾਈ ॥
jō mai bēdan sā kis ākhā māī .
Who can I tell about my pain, O my mother?
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੀਉ ਨ ਰਹੈ ਕੈਸੇ ਰਾਖਾ ਮਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har bin jīu n rahai kaisē rākhā māī .1. rahāu .
Without the Lord, my soul cannot survive; how can I comfort it, O my mother? ||1||Pause||
ਹਉ ਦੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਖਰੀ ਰੰਞਾਣੀ ॥
hau dōhāgan kharī ranñānī .
I am a dejected, discarded bride, totally miserable.
ਗਇਆ ਸੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਧਨ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
gaiā s jōban dhan pashutānī .2.
I have lost my youth; I regret and repent. ||2||
ਤੂ ਦਾਨਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
tū dānā sāhib sir mērā .
You are my wise Lord and Master, above my head.
ਖਿਜਮਤਿ ਕਰੀ ਜਨੁ ਬੰਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ ॥੩॥
khijamat karī jan bandā tērā .3.
I serve You as Your humble slave. ||3||
ਭਣਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਏਹੀ ॥
bhanat nānak andēsā ēhī .
Nanak humbly prays, this is my only concern:
ਬਿਨੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈਸੇ ਰਵਉ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥੪॥੫॥
bin darasan kaisē ravau sanēhī .4.5.
without the Blessed Vision of my Beloved, how can I enjoy Him? ||4||5||
