ਥਾਨ ਮੁਕਾਮ ਜਲੇ ਬਿਜ ਮੰਦਰ ਮੁਛਿ ਮੁਛਿ ਕੁਇਰ ਰੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
thān mukām jalē bij mandar mush mush kuir rulāiā .
He burned the rest-houses and the ancient temples; he cut the princes limb from limb, and cast them into the dust.
ਕੋਈ ਮੁਗਲੁ ਨ ਹੋਆ ਅੰਧਾ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਰਚਾ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
kōī mugal n hōā andhā kinai n parachā lāiā .4.
None of the Mugals went blind, and no one performed any miracle. ||4||
ਮੁਗਲ ਪਠਾਣਾ ਭਈ ਲੜਾਈ ਰਣ ਮਹਿ ਤੇਗ ਵਗਾਈ ॥
mugal pathānā bhaī larāī ran mah tēg vagāī .
The battle raged between the Mugals and the Pat'haans, and the swords clashed on the battlefield.
ਓਨ੍ਹੀ ਤੁਪਕ ਤਾਣਿ ਚਲਾਈ ਓਨ੍ਹੀ ਹਸਤਿ ਚਿੜਾਈ ॥
ōnhī tupak tān chalāī ōnhī hasat chirāī .
They took aim and fired their guns, and they attacked with their elephants.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ ਕੀ ਚੀਰੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਟੀ ਤਿਨ੍ਹਾ ਮਰਣਾ ਭਾਈ ॥੫॥
jinh kī chīrī daragah pātī tinhā maranā bhāī .5.
Those men whose letters were torn in the Lord's Court, were destined to die, O Siblings of Destiny. ||5||
ਇਕ ਹਿੰਦਵਾਣੀ ਅਵਰ ਤੁਰਕਾਣੀ ਭਟਿਆਣੀ ਠਕੁਰਾਣੀ ॥
ik hindavānī avar turakānī bhatiānī thakurānī .
The Hindu women, the Muslim women, the Bhattis and the Rajputs
ਇਕਨ੍ਹਾ ਪੇਰਣ ਸਿਰ ਖੁਰ ਪਾਟੇ ਇਕਨ੍ਹਾ ਵਾਸੁ ਮਸਾਣੀ ॥
ikanhā pēran sir khur pātē ikanhā vās masānī .
- some had their robes torn away, from head to foot, while others came to dwell in the cremation ground.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਬੰਕੇ ਘਰੀ ਨ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ ਕਿਉ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥੬॥
jinh kē bankē gharī n āiā tinh kiu rain vihānī .6.
Their husbands did not return home - how did they pass their night? ||6||
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਈਐ ॥
āpē karē karāē karatā kis nō ākh sunāīai .
The Creator Himself acts, and causes others to act. Unto whom should we complain?
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਸ ਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਰੂਆਈਐ ॥
dukh sukh tērai bhānai hōvai kis thai jāi rūāīai .
Pleasure and pain come by Your Will; unto whom should we go and cry?
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੭॥੧੨॥
hukamī hukam chalāē vigasai nānak likhiā pāīai .7.12.
The Commander issues His Command, and is pleased. O Nanak, we receive what is written in our destiny. ||7||12||

ਜੈਸੇ ਗੋਇਲਿ ਗੋਇਲੀ ਤੈਸੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
jaisē gōil gōilī taisē sansārā .
As the shepherd is in the field for only a short time, so is one in the world.
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਆਦਮੀ ਬਾਂਧਹਿ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
kūr kamāvah ādamī bānhdhah ghar bārā .1.
Practicing falsehood, they build their homes. ||1||
ਜਾਗਹੁ ਜਾਗਹੁ ਸੂਤਿਹੋ ਚਲਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jāgah jāgah sūtihō chaliā vanajārā .1. rahāu .
Wake up! Wake up! O sleepers, see that the travelling merchant is leaving. ||1||Pause||
ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਘਰ ਬਾਂਧੀਅਹਿ ਜੇ ਰਹਣਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
nīt nīt ghar bānhdhīah jē rahanā hōī .
Go ahead and build your houses, if you think you will stay here forever and ever.
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਚਲਸੀ ਜੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੨॥
pind pavai jīu chalasī jē jānai kōī .2.
The body shall fall, and the soul shall depart; if only they knew this. ||2||
ਓਹੀ ਓਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਹੈ ਹੋਸੀ ਸੋਈ ॥
ōhī ōhī kiā karah hai hōsī sōī .
Why do you cry out and mourn for the dead? The Lord is, and shall always be.
ਤੁਮ ਰੋਵਹੁਗੇ ਓਸ ਨੋ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਕਉਣੁ ਰੋਈ ॥੩॥
tum rōvahugē ōs nō tumh kau kaun rōī .3.
You mourn for that person, but who will mourn for you? ||3||
ਧੰਧਾ ਪਿਟਿਹੁ ਭਾਈਹੋ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥
dhandhā pitih bhāīhō tumh kūr kamāvah .
You are engrossed in worldly entanglements, O Siblings of Destiny, and you are practicing falsehood.
ਓਹੁ ਨ ਸੁਣਈ ਕਤ ਹੀ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਣਾਵਹੁ ॥੪॥
ōh n sunaī kat hī tumh lōk sunāvah .4.
The dead person does not hear anything at all; your cries are heard only by other people. ||4||
ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਸੁਤਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਾਗਾਏ ਸੋਈ ॥
jis tē sutā nānakā jāgāē sōī .
Only the Lord, who causes the mortal to sleep, O Nanak, can awaken him again.
ਜੇ ਘਰੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਾਂ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥
jē ghar būjhai āpanā tānh nīd n hōī .5.
One who understands his true home, does not sleep. ||5||
ਜੇ ਚਲਦਾ ਲੈ ਚਲਿਆ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਪੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
jē chaladā lai chaliā kish sanpai nālē .
If the departing mortal can take his wealth with him,
ਤਾ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥੬॥
tā dhan sanchah dēkh kai būjhah bīchārē .6.
then go ahead and gather wealth yourself. See this, reflect upon it, and understand. ||6||
ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਖਸੂਦੁ ਲੈਹੁ ਮਤ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਹੁ ॥
vanaj karah makhasūd laih mat pashōtāvah .
Make your deals, and obtain the true merchandise, or else you shall regret it later.
ਅਉਗਣ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਰਹੁ ਐਸੇ ਤਤੁ ਪਰਾਵਹੁ ॥੭॥
augan shōdah gun karah aisē tat parāvah .7.
Abandon your vices, and practice virtue, and you shall obtain the essence of reality. ||7||
ਧਰਮੁ ਭੂਮਿ ਸਤੁ ਬੀਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਐਸੀ ਕਿਰਸ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥
dharam bhūm sat bīj kar aisī kiras kamāvah .
Plant the seed of Truth in the soil of Dharmic faith, and practice such farming.
ਤਾਂ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਜਾਣੀਅਹੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਲੈ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥੮॥
tānh vāpārī jānīah lāhā lai jāvah .8.
Only then will you be known as a merchant, if you take your profits with you. ||8||
ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
karam hōvai satigur milai būjhai bīchārā .
If the Lord shows His Mercy, one meets the True Guru; contemplating Him, one comes to understand.
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਸੁਣੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਬਿਉਹਾਰਾ ॥੯॥
nām vakhānai sunē nām nāmē biuhārā .9.
Then, one chants the Naam, hears the Naam, and deals only in the Naam. ||9||
ਜਿਉ ਲਾਹਾ ਤੋਟਾ ਤਿਵੈ ਵਾਟ ਚਲਦੀ ਆਈ ॥
jiu lāhā tōtā tivai vāt chaladī āī .
As is the profit, so is the loss; this is the way of the world.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਾਈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧੦॥੧੩॥
jō tis bhāvai nānakā sāī vadiāī .10.13.
Whatever pleases His Will, O Nanak, is glory for me. ||10||13||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਢੂਢੀਆ ਕੋ ਨੀਮ੍ਹੀ ਮੈਡਾ ॥
chārē kundā dhūdhīā kō nīmhī maidā .
I have searched in the four directions, but no one is mine.
ਜੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਤੂ ਮੈ ਹਉ ਤੈਡਾ ॥੧॥
jē tudh bhāvai sāhibā tū mai hau taidā .1.
If it pleases You, O Lord Master, then You are mine, and I am Yours. ||1||
ਦਰੁ ਬੀਭਾ ਮੈ ਨੀਮ੍ਹਿ ਕੋ ਕੈ ਕਰੀ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥
dar bībhā mai nīmh kō kai karī salām .
There is no other door for me; where shall I go to worship?
ਹਿਕੋ ਮੈਡਾ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hikō maidā tū dhanī sāchā mukh nām .1. rahāu .
You are my only Lord; Your True Name is in my mouth. ||1||Pause||
ਸਿਧਾ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸਿਧ ਪੀਰ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ॥
sidhā sēvan sidh pīr māgah ridh sidh .
Some serve the Siddhas, the beings of spiritual perfection, and some serve spiritual teachers; they beg for wealth and miraculous powers.
ਮੈ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਬੁਧਿ ॥੨॥
mai ik nām n vīsarai sāchē gur budh .2.
May I never forget the Naam, the Name of the One Lord. This is the wisdom of the True Guru. ||2||
