ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਦੋਊ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥
dukh sukh dōū sam kar jānai burā bhalā sansār .
He sees pleasure and pain as both the same, along with good and bad in the world.
ਸੁਧਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਿਆਰ ॥੨॥
sudh budh surat nām har pāīai satasangat gur piār .2.
Wisdom, understanding and awareness are found in the Name of the Lord. In the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, embrace love for the Guru. ||2||
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
ahinis lāhā har nām parāpat gur dātā dēvanahār .
Day and night, profit is obtained through the Lord's Name. The Guru, the Giver, has given this gift.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਿਖ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਏ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
guramukh sikh sōī jan pāē jis nō nadar karē karatār .3.
That Sikh who becomes Gurmukh obtains it. The Creator blesses him with His Glance of Grace. ||3||
ਕਾਇਆ ਮਹਲੁ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
kāiā mahal mandar ghar har kā tis mah rākhī jōt apār .
The body is a mansion, a temple, the home of the Lord; He has infused His Infinite Light into it.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰ ॥੪॥੫॥
nānak guramukh mahal bulāīai har mēlē mēlanahār .4.5.
O Nanak, the Gurmukh is invited to the Mansion of the Lord's Presence; the Lord unites him in His Union. ||4||5||

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਪਵਣੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
pavanai pānī jānai jāt .
Know that the creation was formed through air and water;
ਕਾਇਆਂ ਅਗਨਿ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਭਰਾਂਤਿ ॥
kāiānh agan karē nibharānht .
have no doubt that the body was made through fire.
ਜੰਮਹਿ ਜੀਅ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੇ ਥਾਉ ॥
janmah jī jānai jē thāu .
And if you know where the soul comes from,
ਸੁਰਤਾ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥
suratā pandit tā kā nāu .1.
you shall be known as a wise religious scholar. ||1||
ਗੁਣ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ ਮਾਇ ॥
gun gōbind n jānīah māi .
Who can know the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe, O mother?
ਅਣਡੀਠਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
anadīthā kish kahan n jāi .
Without seeing Him, we cannot say anything about Him.
ਕਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kiā kar ākh vakhānīai māi .1. rahāu .
How can anyone speak and describe Him, O mother? ||1||Pause||
ਊਪਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਅਸਮਾਨਿ ਪਇਆਲਿ ॥
ūpar dar asamān paiāl .
He is high above the sky, and beneath the nether worlds.
ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਕਹੀਐ ਦੇਹੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
kiu kar kahīai dēh vīchār .
How can I speak of Him? Let me understand.
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਜੋ ਜਪੈ ਹਿਆਇ ॥ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੈਸਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥
bin jihavā jō japai hiāi . kōī jānai kaisā nāu .2.
Who knows what sort of Name is chanted, in the heart, without the tongue? ||2||
ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਭਰਾਂਤਿ ॥
kathanī badanī rahai nibharānht .
Undoubtedly, words fail me.
ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਦਾਤਿ ॥
sō būjhai hōvai jis dāt .
He alone understands, who is blessed.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
ahinis antar rahai liv lāi .
Day and night, deep within, he remains lovingly attuned to the Lord.
ਸੋਈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਜਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥
sōī purakh j sach samāi .3.
He is the true person, who is merged in the True Lord. ||3||
ਜਾਤਿ ਕੁਲੀਨੁ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜੇ ਹੋਇ ॥
jāt kulīn sēvak jē hōi .
If someone of high social standing becomes a selfless servant,
ਤਾ ਕਾ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਹਹੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
tā kā kahanā kahah n kōi .
then his praises cannot even be expressed.
ਵਿਚਿ ਸਨਾਤੀਂ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
vich sanātīnh sēvak hōi .
And if someone from a low social class becomes a selfless servant,
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਣ੍ਹੀਆ ਪਹਿਰੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੧॥੬॥
nānak panhīā pahirai sōi .4.1.6.
O Nanak, he shall wear shoes of honor. ||4||1||6||

ਦੁਖੁ ਵੇਛੋੜਾ ਇਕੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਭੂਖ ॥
dukh vēshōrā ik dukh bhūkh .
The pain of separation - this is the hungry pain I feel.
ਇਕੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਕਤਵਾਰ ਜਮਦੂਤ ॥
ik dukh sakatavār jamadūt .
Another pain is the attack of the Messenger of Death.
ਇਕੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਰੋਗੁ ਲਗੈ ਤਨਿ ਧਾਇ ॥
ik dukh rōg lagai tan dhāi .
Another pain is the disease consuming my body.
ਵੈਦ ਨ ਭੋਲੇ ਦਾਰੂ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥
vaid n bhōlē dārū lāi .1.
O foolish doctor, don't give me medicine. ||1||
ਵੈਦ ਨ ਭੋਲੇ ਦਾਰੂ ਲਾਇ ॥

ਦਰਦੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਰਹੈ ਸਰੀਰ ॥
darad hōvai dukh rahai sarīr .
The pain persists, and the body continues to suffer.
ਐਸਾ ਦਾਰੂ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਬੀਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aisā dārū lagai n bīr .1. rahāu .
Your medicine has no effect on me. ||1||Pause||
ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਕੀਏ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ॥
khasam visār kīē ras bhōg .
Forgetting his Lord and Master, the mortal enjoys sensual pleasures;
ਤਾਂ ਤਨਿ ਉਠਿ ਖਲੋਏ ਰੋਗ ॥
tānh tan uth khalōē rōg .
then, disease rises up in his body.
ਮਨ ਅੰਧੇ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
man andhē kau milai sajāi .
The blind mortal receives his punishment.
ਵੈਦ ਨ ਭੋਲੇ ਦਾਰੂ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
vaid n bhōlē dārū lāi .2.
O foolish doctor, don't give me medicine. ||2||
ਚੰਦਨ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਚੰਦਨ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
chandan kā phal chandan vās .
The value of sandalwood lies in its fragrance.
ਮਾਣਸ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਘਟ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਸੁ ॥
mānas kā phal ghat mah sās .
The value of the human lasts only as long as the breath in the body.
ਸਾਸਿ ਗਇਐ ਕਾਇਆ ਢਲਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
sās gaiai kāiā dhal pāi .
When the breath is taken away, the body crumbles into dust.
ਤਾ ਕੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥੩॥
tā kai pāshai kōi n khāi .3.
After that, no one takes any food. ||3||
ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੰਸੁ ॥
kanchan kāiā niramal hans .
The mortal's body is golden, and the soul-swan is immaculate and pure,
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਅੰਸੁ ॥
jis mah nām niranjan ans .
if even a tiny particle of the Immaculate Naam is within.
ਦੂਖ ਰੋਗ ਸਭਿ ਗਇਆ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
dūkh rōg sabh gaiā gavāi .
All pain and disease are eradicated.
ਨਾਨਕ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੪॥੨॥੭॥
nānak shūtas sāchai nāi .4.2.7.
O Nanak, the mortal is saved through the True Name. ||4||2||7||

Malaar, First Mehl:
ਦੁਖ ਮਹੁਰਾ ਮਾਰਣ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
dukh mahurā māran har nām .
Pain is the poison. The Lord's Name is the antidote.
ਸਿਲਾ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਪੀਸਣੁ ਹਥਿ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
silā santōkh pīsan hath dān .
Grind it up in the mortar of contentment, with the pestle of charitable giving.
