First Mehl
ਹਕੁ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਉਸੁ ਸੂਅਰ ਉਸੁ ਗਾਇ ॥
hak parāiā nānakā us sūar us gāi .
: To take what rightfully belongs to another, is like a Muslim eating pork, or a Hindu eating beef.
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੀਰੁ ਹਾਮਾ ਤਾ ਭਰੇ ਜਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥
gur pīr hāmā tā bharē jā muradār n khāi .
Our Guru, our Spiritual Guide, stands by us, if we do not eat those carcasses.
ਗਲੀ ਭਿਸਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ਛੁਟੈ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
galī bhisat n jāīai shutai sach kamāi .
By mere talk, people do not earn passage to Heaven. Salvation comes only from the practice of Truth.
ਮਾਰਣ ਪਾਹਿ ਹਰਾਮ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
māran pāh harām mah hōi halāl n jāi .
By adding spices to forbidden foods, they are not made acceptable.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗਲੀ ਕੂੜੀਈ ਕੂੜੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥
nānak galī kūrīī kūrō palai pāi .2.
O Nanak, from false talk, only falsehood is obtained. ||2||

First Mehl:
ਪੰਜਿ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ਵਖਤ ਪੰਜਿ ਪੰਜਾ ਪੰਜੇ ਨਾਉ ॥
panj nivājā vakhat panj panjā panjē nāu .
There are five prayers and five times of day for prayer; the five have five names.
ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਹਲਾਲ ਦੁਇ ਤੀਜਾ ਖੈਰ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥
pahilā sach halāl dui tījā khair khudāi .
Let the first be truthfulness, the second honest living, and the third charity in the Name of God.
ਚਉਥੀ ਨੀਅਤਿ ਰਾਸਿ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਜਵੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਨਾਇ ॥
chauthī nīat rās man panjavī siphat sanāi .
Let the fourth be good will to all, and the fifth the praise of the Lord.
ਕਰਣੀ ਕਲਮਾ ਆਖਿ ਕੈ ਤਾ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਸਦਾਇ ॥
karanī kalamā ākh kai tā musalamān sadāi .
Repeat the prayer of good deeds, and then, you may call yourself a Muslim.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇਤੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੩॥
nānak jētē kūriār kūrai kūrī pāi .3.
O Nanak, the false obtain falsehood, and only falsehood. ||3||

Pauree:
ਇਕਿ ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਣਜਦੇ ਇਕਿ ਕਚੈ ਦੇ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥
ik ratan padārath vanajadē ik kachai dē vāpārā .
Some trade in priceless jewels, while others deal in mere glass.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਪਾਈਅਨਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਤਨ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
satigur tuthai pāīan andar ratan bhandārā .
When the True Guru is pleased, we find the treasure of the jewel, deep within the self.
ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਲਧਿਆ ਅੰਧੇ ਭਉਕਿ ਮੁਏ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ॥
vin gur kinai n ladhiā andhē bhauk muē kūriārā .
Without the Guru, no one has found this treasure. The blind and the false have died in their endless wanderings.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਨਾ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
manamukh dūjai pach muē nā būjhah vīchārā .
The self-willed manmukhs putrefy and die in duality. They do not understand contemplative meditation.
ਇਕਸੁ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ॥
ikas bājhah dūjā kō nahī kis agai karah pukārā .
Without the One Lord, there is no other at all. Unto whom should they complain?
ਇਕਿ ਨਿਰਧਨ ਸਦਾ ਭਉਕਦੇ ਇਕਨਾ ਭਰੇ ਤੁਜਾਰਾ ॥
ik niradhan sadā bhaukadē ikanā bharē tujārā .
Some are destitute, and wander around endlessly, while others have storehouses of wealth.
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਛਾਰਾ ॥
vin nāvai hōr dhan nāhī hōr bikhiā sabh shārā .
Without God's Name, there is no other wealth. Everything else is just poison and ashes.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੭॥
nānak āp karāē karē āp hukam savāranahārā .7.
O Nanak, the Lord Himself acts, and causes others to act; by the Hukam of His Command, we are embellished and exalted. ||7||
ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਮਿਹਰ ਮਸੀਤਿ ਸਿਦਕੁ ਮੁਸਲਾ ਹਕੁ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਕੁਰਾਣੁ ॥
mihar masīt sidak musalā hak halāl kurān .
Let mercy be your mosque, faith your prayer-mat, and honest living your Koran.
ਸਰਮ ਸੁੰਨਤਿ ਸੀਲੁ ਰੋਜਾ ਹੋਹੁ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ॥
saram sunnat sīl rōjā hōh musalamān .
Make modesty your circumcision, and good conduct your fast. In this way, you shall be a true Muslim.
ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਬਾ ਸਚੁ ਪੀਰੁ ਕਲਮਾ ਕਰਮ ਨਿਵਾਜ ॥
karanī kābā sach pīr kalamā karam nivāj .
Let good conduct be your Kaabaa, Truth your spiritual guide, and the karma of good deeds your prayer and chant.
ਤਸਬੀ ਸਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਸੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਖੈ ਲਾਜ ॥੧॥
tasabī sā tis bhāvasī nānak rakhai lāj .1.
Let your rosary be that which is pleasing to His Will. O Nanak, God shall preserve your honor. ||1||
