ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਸੁਇਨੇ ਕੈ ਪਰਬਤਿ ਗੁਫਾ ਕਰੀ ਕੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਇਆਲਿ ॥
suinē kai parabat guphā karī kai pānī paiāl .
I may make a cave, in a mountain of gold, or in the water of the nether regions;
ਕੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਕੈ ਆਕਾਸੀ ਉਰਧਿ ਰਹਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰਿ ॥
kai vich dharatī kai ākāsī uradh rahā sir bhār .
I may remain standing on my head, upside-down, on the earth or up in the sky;
ਪੁਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਕਪੜੁ ਪਹਿਰਾ ਧੋਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਰਿ ॥
pur kar kāiā kapar pahirā dhōvā sadā kār .
I may totally cover my body with clothes, and wash them continually;
ਬਗਾ ਰਤਾ ਪੀਅਲਾ ਕਾਲਾ ਬੇਦਾ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
bagā ratā pīalā kālā bēdā karī pukār .
I may shout out loud, the white, red, yellow and black Vedas;
ਹੋਇ ਕੁਚੀਲੁ ਰਹਾ ਮਲੁ ਧਾਰੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥
hōi kuchīl rahā mal dhārī duramat mat vikār .
I may even live in dirt and filth. And yet, all this is just a product of evil-mindedness, and intellectual corruption.
ਨਾ ਹਉ ਨਾ ਮੈ ਨਾ ਹਉ ਹੋਵਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
nā hau nā mai nā hau hōvā nānak sabad vīchār .1.
I was not, I am not, and I will never be anything at all! O Nanak, I dwell only on the Word of the Shabad. ||1||

mah 1 .
First Mehl:
ਵਸਤ੍ਰ ਪਖਾਲਿ ਪਖਾਲੇ ਕਾਇਆ ਆਪੇ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
vasatr pakhāl pakhālē kāiā āpē sanjam hōvai .
They wash their clothes, and scrub their bodies, and try to practice self-discipline.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਲਗੀ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਮਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਧੋਵੈ ॥
antar mail lagī nahī jānai bāharah mal mal dhōvai .
But they are not aware of the filth staining their inner being, while they try and try to wash off the outer dirt.
ਅੰਧਾ ਭੂਲਿ ਪਇਆ ਜਮ ਜਾਲੇ ॥
andhā bhūl paiā jam jālē .
The blind go astray, caught by the noose of Death.
ਵਸਤੁ ਪਰਾਈ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਘਾਲੇ ॥
vasat parāī apunī kar jānai haumai vich dukh ghālē .
They see other people's property as their own, and in egotism, they suffer in pain.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥
nānak guramukh haumai tutai tā har har nām dhiāvai .
O Nanak, the egotism of the Gurmukhs is broken, and then, they meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੇ ਨਾਮੋ ਆਰਾਧੇ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
nām japē nāmō ārādhē nāmē sukh samāvai .2.
They chant the Naam, meditate on the Naam, and through the Naam, they are absorbed in peace. ||2||

Pauree:
ਕਾਇਆ ਹੰਸਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
kāiā hans sanjōg mēl milāiā .
Destiny has brought together and united the body and the soul-swan.
ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਕੀਆ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
tin hī kīā vijōg jin upāiā .
He who created them, also separates them.
ਮੂਰਖੁ ਭੋਗੇ ਭੋਗੁ ਦੁਖ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
mūrakh bhōgē bhōg dukh sabāiā .
The fools enjoy their pleasures; they must also endure all their pains.
ਸੁਖਹੁ ਉਠੇ ਰੋਗ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
sukhah uthē rōg pāp kamāiā .
From pleasures, arise diseases and the commission of sins.
ਹਰਖਹੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਖਪਾਇਆ ॥
harakhah sōg vijōg upāi khapāiā .
From sinful pleasures come sorrow, separation, birth and death.
ਮੂਰਖ ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਇ ਝਗੜਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
mūrakh ganat ganāi jhagarā pāiā .
The fools try to account for their misdeeds, and argue uselessly.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਨਿਬੇੜੁ ਝਗੜੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
satigur hath nibēr jhagar chukāiā .
The judgement is in the Hands of the True Guru, who puts an end to the argument.
ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਗੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
karatā karē s hōg n chalai chalāiā .4.
Whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. It cannot be changed by anyone's efforts. ||4||
