ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Maajh, Third Mehl:
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
māiā mōh jagat sabāiā .
The whole world is engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਦੀਸਹਿ ਮੋਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
trai gun dīsah mōhē māiā .
Those who are controlled by the three qualities are attached to Maya.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕੋ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
gur parasādī kō viralā būjhai chauthai pad liv lāvaniā .1.
By Guru's Grace, a few come to understand; they center their consciousness in the fourth state. ||1||
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
hau vārī jīu vārī māiā mōh sabad jalāvaniā .
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who burn away their emotional attachment to Maya, through the Shabad.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਲਾਏ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
māiā mōh jalāē sō har siu chit lāē har dar mahalī sōbhā pāvaniā .1. rahāu .
Those who burn away this attachment to Maya, and focus their consciousness on the Lord are honored in the True Court, and the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||1||Pause||
ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
dēvī dēvā mūl hai māiā .
The source, the root, of the gods and goddesses is Maya.
ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਜਿੰਨਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
sinmrit sāsat jinn upāiā .
For them, the Simritees and the Shaastras were composed.
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
kām krōdh pasariā sansārē āi jāi dukh pāvaniā .2.
Sexual desire and anger are diffused throughout the universe. Coming and going, people suffer in pain. ||2||
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਇਕੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
tis vich giān ratan ik pāiā .
The jewel of spiritual wisdom was placed within the universe.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥
gur parasādī mann vasāiā .
By Guru's Grace, it is enshrined within the mind.
ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
jat sat sanjam sach kamāvai gur pūrai nām dhiāvaniā .3.
Celibacy, chastity, self-discipline and the practice of truthfulness are obtained from the Perfect Guru, by meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||3||
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਧਨ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣੀ ॥
pēīarai dhan bharam bhulānī .
In this world of her parents' home, the soul-bride has been deluded by doubt.
ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਣੀ ॥
dūjai lāgī phir pashōtānī .
Attached to duality, she later comes to regret it.
ਹਲਤੁ ਪਲਤੁ ਦੋਵੈ ਗਵਾਏ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
halat palat dōvai gavāē supanai sukh n pāvaniā .4.
She forfeits both this world and the next, and even in her dreams, she does not find peace. ||4||
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਧਨ ਕੰਤੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥
pēīarai dhan kant samālē .
The soul-bride who remembers her Husband Lord in this world,
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਵੇਖੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
gur parasādī vēkhai nālē .
by Guru's Grace, sees Him close at hand.
ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਹੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿੰਗਾਰੁ ਬਣਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
pir kai sahaj rahai rang rātī sabad singār banāvaniā .5.
She remains intuitively attuned to the Love of her Beloved; she makes the Word of His Shabad her decoration. ||5||
ਸਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
saphal janam jinā satigur pāiā .
Blessed and fruitful is the coming of those who find the True Guru;
ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇਆ ॥
dūjā bhāu gur sabad jalāiā .
through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they burn their love of duality.
ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
ēkō rav rahiā ghat antar mil satasangat har gun gāvaniā .6.
The One Lord is permeating and pervading deep within the heart. Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||6||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਕਾਹੇ ਆਇਆ ॥
satigur n sēvē sō kāhē āiā .
Those who do not serve the True Guru-why did they even come into this world?
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
dhrig jīvan birathā janam gavāiā .
Cursed are their lives; they have uselessly wasted this human life.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
manamukh nām chit n āvai bin nāvai bah dukh pāvaniā .7.
The self-willed manmukhs do not remember the Naam. Without the Naam, they suffer in terrible pain. ||7||
ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jin sisat sājī sōī jānai .
The One who created the Universe, He alone knows it.
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
āpē mēlai sabad pashānai .
He unites with Himself those who realize the Shabad.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਜਿਨ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧॥੩੨॥੩੩॥
nānak nām miliā tin jan kau jin dhur masatak lēkh likhāvaniā .8.1.32.33.
O Nanak, they alone receive the Naam, upon whose foreheads such pre-ordained destiny is recorded. ||8||1||32||33||
