ਏਕੋ ਅਮਰੁ ਏਕਾ ਪਤਿਸਾਹੀ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
ēkō amar ēkā patisāhī jug jug sir kār banāī hē .1.
There is only One Command, and there is only One Supreme King. In each and every age, He links each to their tasks. ||1||
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
sō jan niramal jin āp pashātā .
That humble being is immaculate, who knows his own self.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਸੀ ॥
jō tis bhāvai sōī karasī .
He does whatever He pleases.
ਆਪਹੁ ਹੋਆ ਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਸੀ ॥
āpah hōā nā kish hōsī .
No one has done, or can do anything by himself.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੩॥
nānak nām milai vadiāī dar sāchai pat pāī hē .16.3.
O Nanak, through the Name, one is blessed with glorious greatness, and obtains honor in the Court of the True Lord. ||16||3||
ਆਪੇ ਆਇ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥
āpē āi miliā sukhadātā .
The Lord, the Giver of peace, Himself comes and meets him.
ਰਸਨਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
rasanā sabad ratī gun gāvai dar sāchai pat pāī hē .2.
His tongue is imbued with the Shabad, and he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord; he is honored in the Court of the True Lord. ||2||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
guramukh nām milai vadiāī .
The Gurmukh is blessed with the glorious greatness of the Naam.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਿੰਦਕਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
manamukh nindak pat gavāī .
The self-willed manmukh, the slanderer, loses his honor.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਰਮ ਹੰਸ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
nām ratē param hans bairāgī nij ghar tārī lāī hē .3.
Attuned to the Naam, the supreme soul-swans remain detached; in the home of the self, they remain absorbed in deep meditative trance. ||3||
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥
sabad marai sōī jan pūrā .
That humble being who dies in the Shabad is perfect.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ਸੂਰਾ ॥
satigur ākh sunāē sūrā .
The brave, heroic True Guru chants and proclaims this.
ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਨੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
kāiā andar anmrit sar sāchā man pīvai bhāi subhāī hē .4.
Deep within the body is the true pool of Ambrosial Nectar; the mind drinks it in with loving devotion. ||4||
ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਅਵਰਾ ਸਮਝਾਏ ॥
par pandit avarā samajhāē .
The Pandit, the religious scholar, reads and instructs others,
ਘਰ ਜਲਤੇ ਕੀ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥
ghar jalatē kī khabar n pāē .
but he does not realize that his own home is on fire.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੜਿ ਥਾਕੇ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
bin satigur sēvē nām n pāīai par thākē sānht n āī hē .5.
Without serving the True Guru, the Naam is not obtained. You can read until you are exhausted, but you shall not find peace and tranquility. ||5||
ਇਕਿ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ॥
ik bhasam lagāi phirah bhēkhadhārī .
Some smear their bodies with ashes, and wander around in religious disguises.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਿਨਿ ਮਾਰੀ ॥
bin sabadai haumai kin mārī .
Without the Word of the Shabad, who has ever subdued egotism?
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੇਖਿ ਭਰਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
anadin jalat rahah din rātī bharam bhēkh bharamāī hē .6.
Night and day, they continue burning, day and night; they are deluded and confused by their doubt and religious costumes. ||6||
ਇਕਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਮਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਉਦਾਸੀ ॥
ik grih kutanb mah sadā udāsī .
Some, in the midst of their household and family, remain always unattached.
ਸਬਦਿ ਮੁਏ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ॥
sabad muē har nām nivāsī .
They die in the Shabad, and dwell in the Lord's Name.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
anadin sadā rahah rang rātē bhai bhāi bhagat chit lāī hē .7.
Night and day, they remain forever attuned to His Love; they focus their consciousness on loving devotion and the Fear of God. ||7||
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵਿਗੁਤਾ ॥
manamukh nindā kar kar vigutā .
The self-willed manmukh indulges in slander, and is ruined.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਭਉਕੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਕੁਤਾ ॥
antar lōbh bhaukai jis kutā .
The dog of greed barks within him.
ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
jamakāl tis kadē n shōdai ant gaiā pashutāī hē .8.
The Messenger of Death never leaves him, and in the end, he leaves, regretting and repenting. ||8||
ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੀ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
sachai sabad sachī pat hōī .
Through the True Word of the Shabad, true honor is obtained.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
bin nāvai mukat n pāvai kōī .
Without the Name, no one attains liberation.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੋ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਐਸੀ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
bin satigur kō nāu n pāē prabh aisī banat banāī hē .9.
Without the True Guru, no one finds the Name. Such is the making which God has made. ||9||
ਇਕਿ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
ik sidh sādhik bahut vīchārī .
Some are Siddhas and seekers, and great contemplators.
ਇਕਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
ik ahinis nām ratē nirankārī .
Some remain imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Formless Lord, day and night.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਭਉ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
jis nō āp milāē sō būjhai bhagat bhāi bhau jāī hē .10.
He alone understands, whom the Lord unites with Himself; through loving devotional worship, fear is dispelled. ||10||
ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝਹਿ ॥
isanān dān karah nahī būjhah .
Some take cleansing baths and give donations to charities, but they do not understand.
ਇਕਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਨੈ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝਹਿ ॥
ik manūā mār manai siu lūjhah .
Some struggle with their minds, and conquer and subdue their minds.
ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਇਕ ਰੰਗੀ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
sāchai sabad ratē ik rangī sāchai sabad milāī hē .11.
Some are imbued with love for the True Word of the Shabad; they merge with the True Shabad. ||11||
ਆਪੇ ਸਿਰਜੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
āpē sirajē dē vadiāī .
He Himself creates and bestows glorious greatness.
ਆਪੇ ਭਾਣੈ ਦੇਇ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥
āpē bhānai dēi milāī .
By the Pleasure of His Will, He bestows union.
ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਇਉ ਫੁਰਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
āpē nadar karē man vasiā mērai prabh iu phuramāī hē .12.
Bestowing His Grace, He comes to dwell in the mind; such is the Command ordained by my God. ||12||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸਾਚੇ ॥
satigur sēvah sē jan sāchē .
Those humble beings who serve the True Guru are true.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੇਵਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਕਾਚੇ ॥
manamukh sēv n jānan kāchē .
The false, self-willed manmukhs do not know how to serve the Guru.
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
āpē karatā kar kar vēkhai jiu bhāvai tiu lāī hē .13.
The Creator Himself creates the creation and watches over it; he attaches all according to the Pleasure of His Will. ||13||
ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ॥
jug jug sāchā ēkō dātā .
In each and every age, the True Lord is the one and only Giver.
ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
pūrai bhāg gur sabad pashātā .
Through perfect destiny, one realizes the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੇ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਦਰੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
sabad milē sē vishurē nāhī nadarī sahaj milāī hē .14.
Those who are immersed in the Shabad are not separated again. By His Grace, they are intuitively immersed in the Lord. ||14||
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੈਲੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
haumai māiā mail kamāiā .
Acting in egotism, they are stained with the filth of Maya.
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
mārū mahalā 3 .
Maaroo, Third Mehl:
ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ॥
jagajīvan sāchā ēkō dātā .
One One True Lord is the Life of the World, the Great Giver.
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
gur sēvā tē sabad pashātā .
Serving the Guru, through the Word of the Shabad, He is realized.
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
mar mar janmah dūjā bhāiā .
They die and die again, only to be reborn in the love of duality.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਮਨਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
bin satigur sēvē mukat n hōī man dēkhah liv lāī hē .15.
Without serving the True Guru, no one finds liberation. O mind, tune into this, and see. ||15||
