ਅਤਿ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
at ras mīthā nām piārā .
The sublime essence of the Beloved Naam is utterly sweet.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
nānak kau jug jug har jas dījai har japīai ant n pāiā .5.
O Lord, please bless Nanak with Your Praise in each and every age; meditating on the Lord, I cannot find His limits. ||5||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੀਰਾ ॥
antar nām parāpat hīrā .
With the Naam deep within the nucleus of the self, the jewel is obtained.
ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਧੀਰਾ ॥
har japatē man man tē dhīrā .
Meditating on the Lord, the mind is comforted and consoled by the mind itself.
ਦੁਘਟ ਘਟ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੬॥
dughat ghat bhau bhanjan pāīai bāhur janam n jāiā .6.
On that most difficult path, the Destroyer of fear is found, and one does not have to enter the womb of reincarnation again. ||6||
ਭਗਤਿ ਹੇਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਰੰਗਾ ॥
bhagat hēt gur sabad tarangā .
Through the Word of the Gurus Shabad, inspiration for loving devotional worship wells up.
ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਮੰਗਾ ॥
har jas nām padārath mangā .
I beg for the treasure of the Naam, and the Lord's Praise.
ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੭॥
har bhāvai gur mēl milāē har tārē jagat sabāiā .7.
When it pleases the Lord, He unites me in Union with the Guru; the Lord saves the whole world. ||7||
ਜਿਨਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਿਓ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਤਿ ਵਾ ਕੇ ॥
jin jap japiō satigur mat vā kē .
One who chants the Lord's Chant, attains the Wisdom of the True Guru.
ਜਮਕੰਕਰ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੇਵਕ ਪਗ ਤਾ ਕੇ ॥
jamakankar kāl sēvak pag tā kē .
The tyrant, the Messenger of Death, becomes a servant at his feet.
ਊਤਮ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਜਗੁ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੮॥
ūtam sangat gat mit ūtam jag bhaujal pār tarāiā .8.
In the noble congregation of the Sangat, one's state and way of life become noble as well, and one crosses over the terrifying world-ocean. ||8||
ਇਹੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਗੁਰ ਤਰੀਐ ॥
ih bhavajal jagat sabad gur tarīai .
Through the Shabad, one crosses over this terrifying world-ocean.
ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਰੀਐ ॥
antar kī dubidhā antar jarīai .
The duality within is burnt away from within.
ਪੰਚ ਬਾਣ ਲੇ ਜਮ ਕਉ ਮਾਰੈ ਗਗਨੰਤਰਿ ਧਣਖੁ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥੯॥
panch bān lē jam kau mārai gaganantar dhanakh charāiā .9.
Taking up the five arrows of virtue, Death is killed, drawing the Bow of the Tenth Gate in the Mind's Sky. ||9||
ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰਿ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
sākat nar sabad surat kiu pāīai .
How can the faithless cynics attain enlightened awareness of the Shabad?
ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ॥
sabad surat bin āīai jāīai .
Without awareness of the Shabad, they come and go in reincarnation.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਰਾਇਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੦॥
nānak guramukh mukat parāin har pūrai bhāg milāiā .10.
O Nanak, the Gurmukh obtains the support of liberation; by perfect destiny, he meets the Lord. ||10||
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੈ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥
nirabhau satigur hai rakhavālā .
The Fearless True Guru is our Savior and Protector.
ਭਗਤਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥
bhagat parāpat gur gōpālā .
Devotional worship is obtained through the Guru, the Lord of the world.
ਧੁਨਿ ਅਨੰਦ ਅਨਾਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੧॥
dhun anand anāhad vājai gur sabad niranjan pāiā .11.
The blissful music of the unstruck sound current vibrates and resounds; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Immaculate Lord is obtained. ||11||
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸੋ ਸਿਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਲੇਖਾ ॥
nirabhau sō sir nāhī lēkhā .
He alone is fearless, who has no destiny written on His head.
ਆਪਿ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਹੈ ਦੇਖਾ ॥
āp alēkh kudarat hai dēkhā .
God Himself is unseen; He reveals Himself through His wondrous creative power.
ਆਪਿ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਸੰਭਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੨॥
āp atīt ajōnī sanbhau nānak guramat sō pāiā .12.
He Himself is unattached, unborn and self-existent. O Nanak, through the Guru's Teachings, He is found. ||12||
ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
antar kī gat satigur jānai .
The True Guru knows the state of one's inner being.
ਸੋ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
sō nirabhau gur sabad pashānai .
He alone is fearless, who realizes the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਅੰਤਰੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਅਨਤ ਨ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥
antar dēkh nirantar būjhai anat n man dōlāiā .13.
He looks within his own inner being, and realizes the Lord within all; his mind does not waver at all. ||13||
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸੋ ਅਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ॥
nirabhau sō abh antar vasiā .
He alone is fearless, within whose being the Lord abides.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਰਸਿਆ ॥
ahinis nām niranjan rasiā .
Day and night, he is delighted with the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੪॥
nānak har jas sangat pāīai har sahajē sahaj milāiā .14.
O Nanak, in the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, the Lord's Praise is obtained, and one easily, intuitively meets the Lord. ||14||
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪਰਹਰੁ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ॥
kām krōdh parahar par nindā .
Leave behind sexual desire, anger and the slander of others.
ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਤਜਿ ਹੋਹੁ ਨਿਚਿੰਦਾ ॥
lab lōbh taj hōh nichindā .
Renounce greed and possessiveness, and become carefree.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
antar bāhar sō prabh jānai .
One who knows God, within the self and beyond,
ਰਹੈ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਚਲਤੇ ਘਰਿ ਆਣੈ ॥
rahai alipat chalatē ghar ānai .
remains detached, and brings his wandering mind back to its home.
ਊਪਰਿ ਆਦਿ ਸਰਬ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥੪॥੨੧॥
ūpar ād sarab tih lōī sach nānak anmrit ras pāiā .15.4.21.
The True Primal Lord is over all the three worlds; O Nanak, His Ambrosial Nectar is obtained. ||15||4||21||
ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕਾ ਸੰਗਲੁ ਤੋੜਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
bhram kā sangal tōr nirālā har antar har ras pāiā .1.
Break the chains of doubt, and remain unattached; you shall find the Lord, and the Lords sublime essence, deep within yourself. ||1||
ਨਿਸਿ ਦਾਮਨਿ ਜਿਉ ਚਮਕਿ ਚੰਦਾਇਣੁ ਦੇਖੈ ॥
nis dāman jiu chamak chandāin dēkhai .
As one sees the flash of lightning in the night,
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਪੇਖੈ ॥
ahinis jōt nirantar pēkhai .
see the Divine Light deep within your nucleus, day and night.
ਆਨੰਦ ਰੂਪੁ ਅਨੂਪੁ ਸਰੂਪਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੇਖਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
ānand rūp anūp sarūpā gur pūrai dēkhāiā .2.
The Lord, the embodiment of bliss, incomparably beautiful, reveals the Perfect Guru. ||2||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤਾਰੇ ॥
satigur milah āpē prabh tārē .
So meet with the True Guru, and God Himself will save you,
ਸਸਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੂਰੁ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਗੈਣਾਰੇ ॥
sas ghar sūr dīpak gainārē .
He placed the lamps of the sun and the moon in the home of the sky.
ਦੇਖਿ ਅਦਿਸਟੁ ਰਹਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਸਭੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
dēkh adisat rahah liv lāgī sabh tribhavan braham sabāiā .3.
See the invisible Lord, and remain absorbed in loving devotion. God is all throughout the three worlds. ||3||
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਏ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭਉ ਜਾਏ ॥
anmrit ras pāē trisanā bhau jāē .
Obtaining the sublime ambrosial essence, desire and fear are dispelled.
ਅਨਭਉ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
anabhau pad pāvai āp gavāē .
The state of inspired illumination is obtained, and self-conceit is eradicated.
ਊਚੀ ਪਦਵੀ ਊਚੋ ਊਚਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
ūchī padavī ūchō ūchā niramal sabad kamāiā .4.
The lofty and exalted state, the highest of the high is obtained, practicing the immaculate Word of the Shabad. ||4||
ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
adrisat agōchar nām apārā .
The Naam, the Name of the invisible and unfathomable Lord, is infinite.
