ਸਾਮ ਵੇਦੁ ਰਿਗੁ ਜੁਜਰੁ ਅਥਰਬਣੁ ॥

The Saam Veda, the Rig Veda, the Jujar Veda and the At'harva Veda
ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ॥
brahamē mukh māiā hai trai gun .
form the mouth of Brahma; they speak of the three gunas, the three qualities of Maya.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋ ਤਿਉ ਬੋਲੇ ਜਿਉ ਬੋਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥
tā kī kīmat kah n sakai kō tiu bōlē jiu bōlāidā .9.
None of them can describe His worth. We speak as He inspires us to speak. ||9||
ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਸਪਤ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਉਪਾਏ ॥
sunnah sapat pātāl upāē .
From the Primal Void, He created the seven nether regions.
ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਭਵਣ ਰਖੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
sunnah bhavan rakhē liv lāē .
From the Primal Void, He established this world to lovingly dwell upon Him.
ਆਪੇ ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕੀਆ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਕੀਆ ਕਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥
āpē kāran kīā aparanpar sabh tērō kīā kamāidā .10.
The Infinite Lord Himself created the creation. Everyone acts as You make them act, Lord. ||10||
ਰਜ ਤਮ ਸਤ ਕਲ ਤੇਰੀ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
raj tam sat kal tērī shāiā .
Your Power is diffused through the three gunas: raajas, taamas and satva.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
janam maran haumai dukh pāiā .
Through egotism, they suffer the pains of birth and death.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਣਿ ਚਉਥੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥
jis nō kripā karē har guramukh gun chauthai mukat karāidā .11.
Those blessed by His Grace become Gurmukh; they attain the fourth state, and are liberated. ||11||
ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਉਪਜੇ ਦਸ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ ॥
sunnah upajē das avatārā .
From the Primal Void, the ten incarnations welled up.
ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੀਆ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥
srisat upāi kīā pāsārā .
Creating the Universe, He made the expanse.
ਦੇਵ ਦਾਨਵ ਗਣ ਗੰਧਰਬ ਸਾਜੇ ਸਭਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥
dēv dānav gan gandharab sājē sabh likhiā karam kamāidā .12.
He fashioned the demi-gods and demons, the heavenly heralds and celestial musicians; everyone acts according to their past karma. ||12||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਮਝੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
guramukh samajhai rōg n hōī .
The Gurmukh understands, and does not suffer the disease.
ਇਹ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਉੜੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
ih gur kī paurī jānai jan kōī .
How rare are those who understand this ladder of the Guru.
ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗੰਤਰਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਰਾਇਣ ਸੋ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭਇਆ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥
jugah jugantar mukat parāin sō mukat bhaiā pat pāidā .13.
Throughout the ages, they are dedicated to liberation, and so they become liberated; thus they are honored. ||13||
ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥
panch tat sunnah paragāsā .
From the Primal Void, the five elements became manifest.
ਦੇਹ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਕਰਮ ਅਭਿਆਸਾ ॥
dēh sanjōgī karam abhiāsā .
They joined to form the body, which engages in actions.
ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਦੁਇ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੀਖੇ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਜਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥
burā bhalā dui masatak līkhē pāp punn bījāidā .14.
Both bad and good are written on the forehead, the seeds of vice and virtue. ||14||
ਊਤਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖ ਨਿਰਾਲੇ ॥
ūtam satigur purakh nirālē .
The True Guru, the Primal Being, is sublime and detached.
ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਤਵਾਲੇ ॥
sabad ratē har ras matavālē .
Attuned to the Word of the Shabad, He is intoxicated with the sublime essence of the Lord.
ਰਿਧਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥
ridh budh sidh giān gurū tē pāīai pūrai bhāg milāidā .15.
Riches, intellect, miraculous spiritual powers and spiritual wisdom are obtained from the Guru; through perfect destiny, they are received. ||15||
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਸੁੰਨ ਕਲਾ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
sunn kalā aparanpar dhārī .
In the Primal Void, the Infinite Lord assumed His Power.
ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰੀ ॥
āp nirālam apar apārī .
He Himself is unattached, infinite and incomparable.
ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਘਨੇਰਾ ॥
is man māiā kau nēh ghanērā .
This mind is so in love with Maya.
ਕੋਈ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਨਿਬੇਰਾ ॥
kōī būjhah giānī karah nibērā .
Only a few are spiritually wise enough to understand and know this.
ਆਪੇ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਸੁੰਨੁ ਉਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥
āpē kudarat kar kar dēkhai sunnah sunn upāidā .1.
He Himself exercised His Creative Power, and He gazes upon His creation; from the Primal Void, He formed the Void. ||1||
ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਸੁੰਨੈ ਤੇ ਸਾਜੇ ॥
paun pānī sunnai tē sājē .
From this Primal Void, He fashioned air and water.
ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਕਾਇਆ ਗੜ ਰਾਜੇ ॥
srisat upāi kāiā gar rājē .
He created the universe, and the king in the fortress of the body.
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਹਸਾ ਨਰੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥
āsā manasā haumai sahasā nar lōbhī kūr kamāidā .16.
In hope and desire, egotism and skepticism, the greedy man acts falsely. ||16||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਏ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
satigur tē pāē vīchārā .
From the True Guru, contemplative meditation is obtained.
ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਸਚੇ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਾ ॥
sunn samādh sachē ghar bārā .
And then, one dwells with the True Lord in His celestial home, the Primal State of Absorption in Deepest Samaadhi.
ਅਗਨਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਜੀਉ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਸੁੰਨੇ ਕਲਾ ਰਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥
agan pānī jīu jōt tumārī sunnē kalā rahāidā .2.
Your Light pervades fire, water and souls; Your Power rests in the Primal Void. ||2||
ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਉਪਾਏ ॥
sunnah brahamā bisan mahēs upāē .
From this Primal Void, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva issued forth.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਦੁ ਸਬਦ ਧੁਨਿ ਸਚੁ ਰਾਮੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੭॥੫॥੧੭॥
nānak niramal nād sabad dhun sach rāmai nām samāidā .17.5.17.
O Nanak, the immaculate sound current of the Naad, and the Music of the Shabad resound; one merges into the True Name of the Lord. ||17||5||17||
ਸੁੰਨੇ ਵਰਤੇ ਜੁਗ ਸਬਾਏ ॥
sunnē varatē jug sabāē .
This Primal Void is pervasive throughout all the ages.
ਇਸੁ ਪਦ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥
is pad vīchārē sō jan pūrā tis milīai bharam chukāidā .3.
That humble being who contemplates this state is perfect; meeting with him, doubt is dispelled. ||3||
ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਸਪਤ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਥਾਪੇ ॥
sunnah sapat sarōvar thāpē .
From this Primal Void, the seven seas were established.
ਜਿਨਿ ਸਾਜੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਆਪੇ ॥
jin sājē vīchārē āpē .
The One who created them, Himself contemplates them.
ਤਿਤੁ ਸਤ ਸਰਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਵੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥
tit sat sar manūā guramukh nāvai phir bāhur jōn n pāidā .4.
That human being who becomes Gurmukh, who bathes in the pool of Truth, is not cast into the womb of reincarnation again. ||4||
ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਗੈਣਾਰੇ ॥
sunnah chand sūraj gainārē .
From this Primal Void, came the moon, the sun and the earth.
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
tis kī jōt tribhavan sārē .
His Light pervades all the three worlds.
ਸੁੰਨੇ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਸੁੰਨੇ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥
sunnē alakh apār nirālam sunnē tārī lāidā .5.
The Lord of this Primal Void is unseen, infinite and immaculate; He is absorbed in the Primal Trance of Deep Meditation. ||5||
ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਧਰਤਿ ਅਕਾਸੁ ਉਪਾਏ ॥
sunnah dharat akās upāē .
From this Primal Void, the earth and the Akaashic Ethers were created.
ਬਿਨੁ ਥੰਮਾ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਚੁ ਕਲ ਪਾਏ ॥
bin thanmā rākhē sach kal pāē .
He supports them without any visible support, by exercising His True Power.
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸਾਜਿ ਮੇਖੁਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਖਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥
tribhavan sāj mēkhulī māiā āp upāi khapāidā .6.
He fashioned the three worlds, and the rope of Maya; He Himself creates and destroys. ||6||
ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਖਾਣੀ ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
sunnah khānī sunnah bānī .
From this Primal Void, came the four sources of creation, and the power of speech.
ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਉਪਜੀ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥
sunnah upajī sunn samānī .
They were created from the Void, and they will merge into the Void.
ਉਤਭੁਜੁ ਚਲਤੁ ਕੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਬਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਦੇਖਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥
utabhuj chalat kīā sir karatai bisamād sabad dēkhāidā .7.
The Supreme Creator created the play of Nature; through the Word of His Shabad, He stages His Wondrous Show. ||7||
ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਦੁਇ ਕੀਏ ॥
sunnah rāt dinas dui kīē .
From this Primal Void, He made both night and day;
ਓਪਤਿ ਖਪਤਿ ਸੁਖਾ ਦੁਖ ਦੀਏ ॥
ōpat khapat sukhā dukh dīē .
creation and destruction, pleasure and pain.
ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਅਮਰੁ ਅਤੀਤਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਜ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥
sukh dukh hī tē amar atītā guramukh nij ghar pāidā .8.
The Gurmukh is immortal, untouched by pleasure and pain. He obtains the home of his own inner being. ||8||
