ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਆਪਣ ਭਾਣੈ ॥
sabh kō bōlai āpan bhānai .
Everyone speaks as they please.
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਬੋਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
manamukh dūjai bōl n jānai .
The self-willed manmukh, in duality, does not know how to speak.
ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਅੰਧਲੀ ਬੋਲੀ ਆਇ ਗਇਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
andhulē kī mat andhalī bōlī āi gaiā dukh tāhā hē .11.
The blind person has a blind and deaf intellect; coming and going in reincarnation, he suffers in pain. ||11||
ਦੁਖ ਮਹਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਦੁਖ ਮਹਿ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
dukh mah janamai dukh mah maranā .
In pain he is born, and in pain he dies.
ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਮਿਟੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥
dūkh n mitai bin gur kī saranā .
His pain is not relieved, without seeking the Sanctuary of the Guru.
ਦੂਖੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਦੂਖੀ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਜਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
dūkhī upajai dūkhī binasai kiā lai āiā kiā lai jāhā hē .12.
In pain he is created, and in pain he perishes. What has he brought with himself? And what will he take away? ||12||
ਸਚੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਕਾਰਾ ॥
sachī karanī gur kī sirakārā .
True are the actions of those who are under the Guru's influence.
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਮ ਧਾਰਾ ॥
āvan jān nahī jam dhārā .
They do not come and go in reincarnation, and they are not subject to the laws of Death.
ਡਾਲ ਛੋਡਿ ਤਤੁ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
dāl shōd tat mūl parātā man sāchā ōmāhā hē .13.
Whoever abandons the branches, and clings to the true root, enjoys true ecstasy within his mind. ||13||
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗ ਨਹੀ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
har kē lōg nahī jam mārai .
Death cannot strike down the people of the Lord.
ਨਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਪੰਥਿ ਕਰਾਰੈ ॥
nā dukh dēkhah panth karārai .
They do not see pain on the most difficult path.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
rām nām ghat antar pūjā avar n dūjā kāhā hē .14.
Deep within the nucleus of their hearts, they worship and adore the Lord's Name; there is nothing else at all for them. ||14||
ਓੜੁ ਨ ਕਥਨੈ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਜਾਈ ॥
ōr n kathanai siphat sajāī .
There is no end to the Lord's sermon and Praise.
ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਰਜਾਈ ॥
jiu tudh bhāvah rahah rajāī .
As it pleases You, I remain under Your Will.
ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਜਾਨਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਚੇ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
daragah paidhē jān suhēlē hukam sachē pātisāhā hē .15.
I am embellished with robes of honor in the Court of the Lord, by the Order of the True King. ||15||
ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਗੁਣ ਕਥਹਿ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥
kiā kahīai gun kathah ghanērē .
How can I chant Your uncounted glories?
ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਵਡੇ ਵਡੇਰੇ ॥
ant n pāvah vadē vadērē .
Even the greatest of the great do not know Your limits.
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੇ ॥
sāchē sāhib sirajanahārē .
The True Lord is the Creator of the Universe.
ਜਿਨਿ ਧਰ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਧਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
jin dhar chakr dharē vīchārē .
He established and contemplates the worldly sphere.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਤੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੬॥੧੨॥
nānak sāch milai pat rākhah tū sir sāhā pātisāhā hē .16.6.12.
Please bless Nanak with the Truth, and preserve his honor; You are the supreme emperor above the heads of kings. ||16||6||12||
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
āpē karatā kar kar vēkhai sāchā vēparavāhā hē .1.
He Himself created the creation, and beholds it; He is True and independent. ||1||
ਵੇਕੀ ਵੇਕੀ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਏ ॥
vēkī vēkī jant upāē .
He created the beings of different kinds.
ਦੁਇ ਪੰਦੀ ਦੁਇ ਰਾਹ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
dui pandī dui rāh chalāē .
The two travellers have set out in two directions.
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
gur pūrē vin mukat n hōī sach nām jap lāhā hē .2.
Without the Perfect Guru, no one is liberated. Chanting the True Name, one profits. ||2||
ਪੜਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਰੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਾ ॥
parah manamukh par bidh nahī jānā .
The self-willed manmukhs read and study, but they do not know the way.
ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ॥
nām n būjhah bharam bhulānā .
They do not understand the Naam, the Name of the Lord; they wander, deluded by doubt.
ਲੈ ਕੈ ਵਢੀ ਦੇਨਿ ਉਗਾਹੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਾ ਗਲਿ ਫਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
lai kai vadhī dēn ugāhī duramat kā gal phāhā hē .3.
They take bribes, and give false testimony; the noose of evil-mindedness is around their necks. ||3||
ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ॥
simrit sāsatr parah purānā .
They read the Simritees, the Shaastras and the Puraanas;
ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
vād vakhānah tat n jānā .
they argue and debate, but do not know the essence of reality.
ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚ ਸੂਚੇ ਸਚੁ ਰਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
vin gur pūrē tat n pāīai sach sūchē sach rāhā hē .4.
Without the Perfect Guru, the essence of reality is not obtained. The true and pure beings walk the Path of Truth. ||4||
ਸਭ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖੈ ॥
sabh sālāhē sun sun ākhai .
All praise God and listen, and listen and speak.
ਆਪੇ ਦਾਨਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਰਾਖੈ ॥
āpē dānā sach parākhai .
He Himself is wise, and He Himself judges the Truth.
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
jin kau nadar karē prabh apanī guramukh sabad salāhā hē .5.
Those whom God blesses with His Glance of Grace become Gurmukh, and praise the Word of the Shabad. ||5||
ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖੈ ਕੇਤੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
sun sun ākhai kētī bānī .
Many listen and listen, and speak the Guru's Bani.
ਸੁਣਿ ਕਹੀਐ ਕੋ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥
sun kahīai kō ant n jānī .
Listening and speaking, no one knows His limits.
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਬੁਧਿ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
jā kau alakh lakhāē āpē akath kathā budh tāhā hē .6.
He alone is wise, unto whom the unseen Lord reveals Himself; he speaks the Unspoken Speech. ||6||
ਜਨਮੇ ਕਉ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਵਾਧਾਏ ॥
janamē kau vājah vādhāē .
At birth, the congratulations pour in;
ਸੋਹਿਲੜੇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਗਾਏ ॥
sōhilarē agiānī gāē .
the ignorant sing songs of joy.
ਜੋ ਜਨਮੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਪਰ ਮਰਣਾ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
jō janamai tis sarapar maranā kirat paiā sir sāhā hē .7.
Whoever is born, is sure to die, according to the destiny of past deeds inscribed upon his head by the Sovereign Lord King. ||7||
ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਏ ॥
sanjōg vijōg mērai prabh kīē .
Union and separation were created by my God.
ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਦੁਖਾ ਸੁਖ ਦੀਏ ॥
srisat upāi dukhā sukh dīē .
Creating the Universe, He gave it pain and pleasure.
ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਭਏ ਨਿਰਾਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੀਲੁ ਸਨਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
dukh sukh hī tē bhaē nirālē guramukh sīl sanāhā hē .8.
The Gurmukhs remain unaffected by pain and pleasure; they wear the armor of humility. ||8||
ਨੀਕੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ॥
nīkē sāchē kē vāpārī .
The noble people are traders in Truth.
ਸਚੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਲੈ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
sach saudā lai gur vīchārī .
They purchase the true merchandise, contemplating the Guru.
ਸਚਾ ਵਖਰੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
sachā vakhar jis dhan palai sabad sachai ōmāhā hē .9.
One who has the wealth of the true commodity in his lap, is blessed with the rapture of the True Shabad. ||9||
ਕਾਚੀ ਸਉਦੀ ਤੋਟਾ ਆਵੈ ॥
kāchī saudī tōtā āvai .
The false dealings lead only to loss.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
guramukh vanaj karē prabh bhāvai .
The trades of the Gurmukh are pleasing to God.
ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਫਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
pūnjī sābat rās salāmat chūkā jam kā phāhā hē .10.
His stock is safe, and his capital is safe and sound. The noose of Death is cut away from around his neck. ||10||
