ਭੂਲੇ ਸਿਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮਝਾਏ ॥
bhūlē sikh gurū samajhāē .
The Guru instructs His wandering Sikhs;
ਉਝੜਿ ਜਾਦੇ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
ujhar jādē mārag pāē .
if they go astray, He sets them on the right path.
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਖਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
tis gur sēv sadā din rātī dukh bhanjan sang sakhātā hē .13.
So serve the Guru, forever, day and night; He is the Destroyer of pain - He is with you as your companion. ||13||
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਕਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥
gur kī bhagat karah kiā prānī .
O mortal being, what devotional worship have you performed to the Guru?
ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿ ਮਹੇਸਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥
brahamai indr mahēs n jānī .
Even Brahma, Indra and Shiva do not know it.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਲਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
satigur alakh kahah kiu lakhīai jis bakhasē tisah pashātā hē .14.
Tell me, how can the unknowable True Guru be known? He alone attains this realization, whom the Lord forgives. ||14||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ॥
antar prēm parāpat darasan .
One who has love within, obtains the Blessed Vision of His Darshan.
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੁ ਪਰਸਨੁ ॥
gurabānī siu prīt s parasan .
One who enshrines love for the Word of the Guru's Bani, meets with Him.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ਘਟਿ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
ahinis niramal jōt sabāī ghat dīpak guramukh jātā hē .15.
Day and night, the Gurmukh sees the immaculate Divine Light everywhere; this lamp illuminates his heart. ||15||
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥
saran parē guradēv tumārī .
O Divine Guru, I have entered Your Sanctuary.
ਭੋਜਨ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ॥
bhōjan giān mahā ras mīthā .
The food of spiritual wisdom is the supremely sweet essence.
ਜਿਨਿ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਡੀਠਾ ॥
jin chākhiā tin darasan dīthā .
Whoever tastes it, sees the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan.
ਤੂ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥
tū samarath daiāl murārī .
You are the Almighty Lord, the Merciful Lord.
ਤੇਰੇ ਚੋਜ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ਤੂ ਪੂਰਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
tērē chōj n jānai kōī tū pūrā purakh bidhātā hē .1.
No one knows Your wondrous plays; You are the perfect Architect of Destiny. ||1||
ਤੂ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ॥
tū ād jugād karah pratipālā .
From the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, You cherish and sustain Your beings.
ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥
darasan dēkh milē bairāgī man manasā mār samātā hē .16.
Beholding His Darshan, the unattached one meets the Lord; subduing the mind's desires, he merges into the Lord. ||16||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਪਰਧਾਨਾ ॥
satigur sēvah sē paradhānā .
Those who serve the True Guru are supreme and famous.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰੂਪੁ ਅਨੂਪੁ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
ghat ghat rūp anūp daiālā .
You are in each and every heart, O Merciful Lord of incomparable beauty.
ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਕੀਆ ਕਮਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
jiu tudh bhāvai tivai chalāvah sabh tērō kīā kamātā hē .2.
As You will, You cause all to walk; everyone acts according to Your Command. ||2||
ਤਿਨ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥
tin ghat ghat antar braham pashānā .
Deep within each and every heart, they recognize God.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਜਿਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੭॥੫॥੧੧॥
nānak har jas har jan kī sangat dījai jin satigur har prabh jātā hē .17.5.11.
Please bless Nanak with the Lord's Praises, and the Sangat, the Congregation of the Lord's humble servants; through the True Guru, they know their Lord God. ||17||5||11||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਭਲੀ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ॥
antar jōt bhalī jagajīvan .
Deep within the nucleus of all, is the Light of the Life of the World.
ਸਭਿ ਘਟ ਭੋਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵਨ ॥
sabh ghat bhōgai har ras pīvan .
The Lord enjoys the hearts of all, and drinks in their essence.
ਆਪੇ ਲੇਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਈ ਜਗਤ ਪਿਤ ਦਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
āpē lēvai āpē dēvai tih lōī jagat pit dātā hē .3.
He Himself gives, and He himself takes; He is the generous father of the beings of the three worlds. ||3||
ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਖੇਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
jagat upāi khēl rachāiā .
Creating the world, He has set His play into motion.
ਪਵਣੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਜੀਉ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
pavanai pānī aganī jīu pāiā .
He placed the soul in the body of air, water and fire.
ਦੇਹੀ ਨਗਰੀ ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਸੋ ਦਸਵਾ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਰਹਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
dēhī nagarī nau daravājē sō dasavā gupat rahātā hē .4.
The body-village has nine gates; the Tenth Gate remains hidden. ||4||
ਚਾਰਿ ਨਦੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਅਸਰਾਲਾ ॥
chār nadī aganī asarālā .
There are four horrible rivers of fire.
ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥
kōī guramukh būjhai sabad nirālā .
How rare is that Gurmukh who understands this, and through the Word of the Shabad, remains unattached.
ਸਾਕਤ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਡੂਬਹਿ ਦਾਝਹਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
sākat duramat dūbah dājhah gur rākhē har liv rātā hē .5.
The faithless cynics are drowned and burnt through their evil-mindedness. The Guru saves those who are imbued with the Love of the Lord. ||5||
ਅਪੁ ਤੇਜੁ ਵਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੀ ਆਕਾਸਾ ॥
ap tēj vāi prithamī ākāsā .
Water, fire, air, earth and ether
ਤਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
tin mah panch tat ghar vāsā .
- in that house of the five elements, they dwell.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਤਜਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
satigur sabad rahah rang rātā taj māiā haumai bhrātā hē .6.
Those who remain imbued with the Word of the True Guru's Shabad, renounce Maya, egotism and doubt. ||6||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ॥
ih man bhījai sabad patījai .
This mind is drenched with the Shabad, and satisfied.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਟੇਕ ਟਿਕੀਜੈ ॥
bin nāvai kiā tēk tikījai .
Without the Name, what support can anyone have?
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਮੁਹੈ ਘਰੁ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਇਨਿ ਸਾਕਤਿ ਦੂਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
antar chōr muhai ghar mandar in sākat dūt n jātā hē .7.
The temple of the body is being plundered by the thieves within, but this faithless cynic does not even recognize these demons. ||7||
ਦੁੰਦਰ ਦੂਤ ਭੂਤ ਭੀਹਾਲੇ ॥
dundar dūt bhūt bhīhālē .
They are argumentative demons, terrifying goblins.
ਖਿੰਚੋਤਾਣਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੇਤਾਲੇ ॥
khinchōtān karah bētālē .
These demons stir up conflict and strife.
ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
sabad surat bin āvai jāvai pat khōī āvat jātā hē .8.
Without awareness of the Shabad, one comes and goes in reincarnation; he loses his honor in this coming and going. ||8||
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਲਰੁ ਤਨੁ ਭਸਮੈ ਢੇਰੀ ॥
kūr kalar tan bhasamai dhērī .
The body of the false person is just a pile of barren dirt.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈਸੀ ਪਤਿ ਤੇਰੀ ॥
bin nāvai kaisī pat tērī .
Without the Name, what honor can you have?
ਬਾਧੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਜਮਕੰਕਰਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਪਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
bādhē mukat nāhī jug chārē jamakankar kāl parātā hē .9.
Bound and gagged throughout the four ages, there is no liberation; the Messenger of Death keeps such a person under his gaze. ||9||
ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਸਜਾਈ ॥
jam dar bādhē milah sajāī .
At Death's door, he is tied up and punished;
ਤਿਸੁ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਈ ॥
tis aparādhī gat nahī kāī .
such a sinner does not obtain salvation.
ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੇ ਬਿਲਲਾਵੈ ਜਿਉ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਮੀਨੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
karan palāv karē bilalāvai jiu kundī mīn parātā hē .10.
He cries out in pain, like the fish pierced by the hook. ||10||
ਸਾਕਤੁ ਫਾਸੀ ਪੜੈ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥
sākat phāsī parai ikēlā .
The faithless cynic is caught in the noose all alone.
ਜਮ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਆ ਅੰਧੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥
jam vas kīā andh duhēlā .
The miserable spiritually blind person is caught in the power of Death.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਆਜੁ ਕਾਲਿ ਪਚਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
rām nām bin mukat n sūjhai āj kāl pach jātā hē .11.
Without the Lord's Name, liberation is not known. He shall waste away, today or tomorrow. ||11||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝੁ ਨ ਬੇਲੀ ਕੋਈ ॥
satigur bājh n bēlī kōī .
Other than the True Guru, no one is your friend.
ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਰਾਖਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
aithai ōthai rākhā prabh sōī .
Here and hereafter, God is the Savior.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਇਉ ਸਲਲੈ ਸਲਲ ਮਿਲਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
rām nām dēvai kar kirapā iu salalai salal milātā hē .12.
He grants His Grace, and bestows the Lord's Name. He merges with Him, like water with water. ||12||
