ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਆਇਆ ॥
haumai mamatā karadā āiā .
Practicing egotism and possessiveness, you have come into the world.
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਬੰਧਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥
āsā manasā bandh chalāiā .
Hope and desire bind you and lead you on.
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਘਰਿ ਰਹੁ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੁਗਧ ਇਆਨੇ ॥
ghar rah rē man mugadh iānē .
Remain in your own home, O my foolish and ignorant mind.
ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਧਿਆਨੇ ॥
rām japah antaragat dhiānē .
Meditate on the Lord - concentrate deep within your being and meditate on Him.
ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਕਿਆ ਲੇ ਚਾਲੇ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਾਦੇ ਛਾਰ ਬਿਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
mērī mērī karat kiā lē chālē bikh lādē shār bikārā hē .15.
Indulging in egotism and self-conceit, what will you be able to carry with you, except the load of ashes from poison and corruption? ||15||
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਜਨ ਭਾਈ ॥
har kī bhagat karah jan bhāī .
Worship the Lord in devotion, O humble Siblings of Destiny.
ਲਾਲਚ ਛੋਡਿ ਰਚਹੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਿ ਇਉ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
lālach shōd rachah aparanpar iu pāvah mukat duārā hē .1.
Renounce your greed, and merge with the infinite Lord. In this way, you shall find the door of liberation. ||1||
ਜਿਸੁ ਬਿਸਰਿਐ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਣਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
jis bisariai jam jōhan lāgai .
If you forget Him, the Messenger of Death will catch sight of you.
ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
akath kathah man manah samāī .
Speak the Unspoken Speech, and the mind will merge back into the Mind.
ਉਠਿ ਚਲਤਾ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਖਹੁ ਘਰਿ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਟੇ ਕਾਟਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥
uth chalatā thāk rakhah ghar apunai dukh kātē kātanahārā hē .16.
Restrain your restless mind within its own home, and the Lord, the Destroyer, shall destroy your pain. ||16||
ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਜਾਹਿ ਦੁਖਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਆਗੈ ॥
sabh sukh jāh dukhā phun āgai .
All peace will be gone, and you will suffer in pain in the world hereafter.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਏਹੁ ਪਰਮ ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
rām nām jap guramukh jīarē ēh param tat vīchārā hē .2.
Chant the Name of the Lord as Gurmukh, O my soul; this is the supreme essence of contemplation. ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਓਟ ਪਰਾਤੀ ॥
har gur pūrē kī ōt parātī .
I seek the support of the Perfect Guru, the Lord.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥
guramukh har liv guramukh jātī .
The Gurmukh loves the Lord; the Gurmukh realizes the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਬਖਸੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੭॥੪॥੧੦॥
nānak rām nām mat ūtam har bakhasē pār utārā hē .17.4.10.
O Nanak, through the Lord's Name, the intellect is exalted; granting His forgiveness, the Lord carries him across to the other side. ||17||4||10||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ॥
har har nām japah ras mīthā .
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, the sweetest essence.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਡੀਠਾ ॥
guramukh har ras antar dīthā .
As Gurmukh, see the essence of the Lord deep within.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਹਹੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਏਹੁ ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
ahinis rām rahah rang rātē ēh jap tap sanjam sārā hē .3.
Day and night, remain imbued with the Lord's Love. This is the essence of all chanting, deep meditation and self-discipline. ||3||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਬੋਲਹੁ ॥
rām nām gur bachanī bōlah .
Speak the Guru's Word, and the Name of the Lord.
ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਮਹਿ ਇਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਟੋਲਹੁ ॥
sant sabhā mah ih ras tōlah .
In the Society of the Saints, search for this essence.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹਹੁ ਘਰੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਗਰਭ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
guramat khōj lahah ghar apanā bahur n garabh majhārā hē .4.
Follow the Guru's Teachings - seek and find the home of your own self, and you shall never be consigned to the womb of reincarnation again. ||4||
ਸਚੁ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹੁ ॥
sach tīrath nāvah har gun gāvah .
Bathe at the sacred shrine of Truth, and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵਹੁ ॥
tat vīchārah har liv lāvah .
Reflect upon the essence of reality, and lovingly focus your consciousness on the Lord.
ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
ant kāl jam jōh n sākai har bōlah rām piārā hē .5.
At the very last moment, the Messenger of Death will not be able to touch you, if you chant the Name of the Beloved Lord. ||5||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਵਡ ਦਾਣਾ ॥
satigur purakh dātā vad dānā .
The True Guru, the Primal Being, the Great Giver, is all-knowing.
ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥
jis antar sāch s sabad samānā .
Whoever has Truth within himself, merges in the Word of the Shabad.
ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਭੈ ਭਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
jis kau satigur mēl milāē tis chūkā jam bhai bhārā hē .6.
One whom the True Guru unites in Union, is rid of the overpowering fear of death. ||6||
ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੀਨੀ ॥
panch tat mil kāiā kīnī .
The body is formed from the union of the five elements.
ਤਿਸ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਲੈ ਚੀਨੀ ॥
tis mah rām ratan lai chīnī .
Know that the Lord's jewel is within it.
ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
ātam rām rām hai ātam har pāīai sabad vīchārā hē .7.
The soul is the Lord, and the Lord is the soul; contemplating the Shabad, the Lord is found. ||7||
ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਰਹਹੁ ਜਨ ਭਾਈ ॥
sat santōkh rahah jan bhāī .
Abide in truth and contentment, O humble Siblings of Destiny.
ਖਿਮਾ ਗਹਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
khimā gahah satigur saranāī .
Hold tight to compassion and the Sanctuary of the True Guru.
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਪਰਾਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਇਹੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
ātam chīn parātam chīnah gur sangat ih nisatārā hē .8.
Know your soul, and know the Supreme Soul; associating with the Guru, you shall be emancipated. ||8||
ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜ ਕਪਟ ਮਹਿ ਟੇਕਾ ॥
sākat kūr kapat mah tēkā .
The faithless cynics are stuck in falsehood and deceit.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥
ahinis nindā karah anēkā .
Day and night, they slander many others.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਗ੍ਰਭ ਜੋਨੀ ਨਰਕ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
bin simaran āvah phun jāvah grabh jōnī narak majhārā hē .9.
Without meditative remembrance, they come and then go, and are cast into the hellish womb of reincarnation. ||9||
ਸਾਕਤ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ॥
sākat jam kī kān n chūkai .
The faithless cynic is not rid of his fear of death.
ਜਮ ਕਾ ਡੰਡੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਮੂਕੈ ॥
jam kā dand n kabahū mūkai .
The Messenger of Death's club is never taken away.
ਬਾਕੀ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੀ ਲੀਜੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਅਫਰਿਓ ਭਾਰੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
bākī dharam rāi kī lījai sir aphariō bhār aphārā hē .10.
He has to answer to the Righteous Judge of Dharma for the account of his actions; the egotistical being carries the unbearable load. ||10||
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕੋ ਤਰਿਆ ॥
bin gur sākat kahah kō tariā .
Tell me: without the Guru, what faithless cynic has been saved?
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤਾ ਭਵਜਲਿ ਪਰਿਆ ॥
haumai karatā bhavajal pariā .
Acting egotistically, he falls into the terrifying world-ocean.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
bin gur pār n pāvai kōī har japīai pār utārā hē .11.
Without the Guru, no one is saved; meditating on the Lord, they are carried across to the other side. ||11||
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
gur kī dāt n mētai kōī .
No one can erase the Guru's blessings.
ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਸੋਈ ॥
jis bakhasē tis tārē sōī .
The Lord carries across those whom He forgives.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
janam maran dukh nēr n āvai man sō prabh apar apārā hē .12.
The pains of birth and death do not even approach those whose minds are filled with God, the infinite and endless. ||12||
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਭੂਲੇ ਆਵਹੁ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥
gur tē bhūlē āvah jāvah .
Those who forget the Guru come and go in reincarnation.
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਹੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥
janam marah phun pāp kamāvah .
They are born, only to die again, and continue committing sins.
ਸਾਕਤ ਮੂੜ ਅਚੇਤ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
sākat mūr achēt n chētah dukh lāgai tā rām pukārā hē .13.
The unconscious, foolish, faithless cynic does not remember the Lord; but when he is stricken with pain, then he cries out for the Lord. ||13||
ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪੁਰਬ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕੀਏ ॥
sukh dukh purab janam kē kīē .
Pleasure and pain are the consequences of the actions of past lives.
ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਦਾਤੈ ਦੀਏ ॥
sō jānai jin dātai dīē .
The Giver, who blesses us with these - He alone knows.
ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਦੋਸੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸਹੁ ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਰਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
kis kau dōs dēh tū prānī sah apanā kīā karārā hē .14.
So who can you blame, O mortal being? The hardships you suffer are from your own actions. ||14||
