ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੀ ॥
kar kirapā prabh pār utārī .
God grants His Grace, and carries him across to the other side.
ਅਗਨਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਤਿ ਗਹਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
agan pānī sāgar at gaharā gur satigur pār utārā hē .2.
The ocean is very deep, filled with fiery water; the Guru, the True Guru, carries us across to the other side. ||2||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
rām nām sādhū saranāī .
In the Sanctuary of the Holy, chant the Lord's Name.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
satigur bachanī gat mit pāī .
Through the True Guru's Teachings, one comes to know His state and extent.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੭॥੩॥੯॥
nānak har jap har man mērē har mēlē mēlanahārā hē .17.3.9.
Nanak: chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; the Lord, the Uniter, shall unite you with Himself. ||17||3||9||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
manamukh andhulē sōjhī nāhī .
The blind, self-willed manmukh does not understand.
ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹੀ ॥
āvah jāh marah mar jāhī .
He comes and goes in reincarnation, dying, and dying again.
ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਅੰਧੁ ਖੁਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
pūrab likhiā lēkh n mitaī jam dar andh khuārā hē .3.
The primal inscription of destiny cannot be erased. The spiritually blind suffer terribly at Death's door. ||3||
ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
ik āvah jāvah ghar vās n pāvah .
Some come and go, and do not find a home in their own heart.
ਕਿਰਤ ਕੇ ਬਾਧੇ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥
kirat kē bādhē pāp kamāvah .
Bound by their past actions, they commit sins.
ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਲੋਭੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
andhulē sōjhī būjh n kāī lōbh burā ahankārā hē .4.
The blind ones have no understanding, no wisdom; they are trapped and ruined by greed and egotism. ||4||
ਪਿਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਧਨ ਸੀਗਾਰਾ ॥
pir bin kiā tis dhan sīgārā .
Without her Husband Lord, what good are the soul-bride's decorations?
ਪਰ ਪਿਰ ਰਾਤੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ॥
par pir rātī khasam visārā .
She has forgotten her Lord and Master, and is infatuated with another's husband.
ਜਿਉ ਬੇਸੁਆ ਪੂਤ ਬਾਪੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਤਿਉ ਫੋਕਟ ਕਾਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
jiu bēsuā pūt bāp kō kahīai tiu phōkat kār vikārā hē .5.
Just as no one knows who is the father of the prostitute's son, such are the worthless, useless deeds that are done. ||5||
ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਪਿੰਜਰ ਮਹਿ ਦੂਖ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥
prēt pinjar mah dūkh ghanērē .
The ghost, in the body-cage, suffers all sorts of afflictions.
ਨਰਕਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਧੇਰੇ ॥
narak pachah agiān andhērē .
Those who are blind to spiritual wisdom, putrefy in hell.
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੀ ਬਾਕੀ ਲੀਜੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
dharam rāi kī bākī lījai jin har kā nām visārā hē .6.
The Righteous Judge of Dharma collects the balance due on the account, of those who forget the Name of the Lord. ||6||
ਸੂਰਜੁ ਤਪੈ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਝਾਲਾ ॥
sūraj tapai agan bikh jhālā .
The scorching sun blazes with flames of poison.
ਅਪਤੁ ਪਸੂ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥
apat pasū manamukh bētālā .
The self-willed manmukh is dishonored, a beast, a demon.
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਬੁਰਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
āsā manasā kūr kamāvah rōg burā buriārā hē .7.
Trapped by hope and desire, he practices falsehood, and is afflicted by the terrible disease of corruption. ||7||
ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਕਲਰ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰਾ ॥
masatak bhār kalar sir bhārā .
He carries the heavy load of sins on his forehead and head.
ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਲੰਘਸਿ ਪਾਰਾ ॥
kiu kar bhavajal langhas pārā .
How can he cross the terrifying world-ocean?
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
satigur bōhith ād jugādī rām nām nisatārā hē .8.
From the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, the True Guru has been the boat; through the Lord's Name, He carries us across. ||8||
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਜਗਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
putr kalatr jag hēt piārā .
The love of one's children and spouse is so sweet in this world.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥
māiā mōh pasariā pāsārā .
The expansive expanse of the Universe is attachment to Maya.
ਜਮ ਕੇ ਫਾਹੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੋੜੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
jam kē phāhē satigur tōrē guramukh tat bīchārā hē .9.
The True Guru snaps the noose of Death, for that Gurmukh who contemplates the essence of reality. ||9||
ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਚਾਲੈ ਬਹੁ ਰਾਹੀ ॥
kūr muthī chālai bah rāhī .
Cheated by falsehood, the self-willed manmukh walks along many paths;
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਦਾਝੈ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭਾਹੀ ॥
manamukh dājhai par par bhāhī .
he may be highly educated, but he burns in the fire.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਡ ਦਾਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
anmrit nām gurū vad dānā nām japah sukh sārā hē .10.
The Guru is the Great Giver of the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord. Chanting the Naam, sublime peace is obtained. ||10||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠਾ ਸਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥
satigur tuthā sach drirāē .
The True Guru, in His Mercy, implants Truth within.
ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟੇ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
sabh dukh mētē mārag pāē .
All suffering is eradicated, and one is placed on the Path.
ਕੰਡਾ ਪਾਇ ਨ ਗਡਈ ਮੂਲੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਰਾਖਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
kandā pāi n gadaī mūlē jis satigur rākhanahārā hē .11.
Not even a thorn ever pierces the foot of one who has the True Guru as his Protector. ||11||
ਖੇਹੂ ਖੇਹ ਰਲੈ ਤਨੁ ਛੀਜੈ ॥
khēhū khēh ralai tan shījai .
Dust mixes with dust, when the body wastes away.
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਪਾਥਰੁ ਸੈਲੁ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
manamukh pāthar sail n bhījai .
The self-willed manmukh is like a stone slab, which is impervious to water.
ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੇ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
karan palāv karē bahutērē narak surag avatārā hē .12.
He cries out and weeps and wails; he is reincarnated into heaven and then hell. ||12||
ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਮ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
māiā bikh bhuiangam nālē .
They live with the poisonous snake of Maya.
ਇਨਿ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਘਰ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਗਾਲੇ ॥
in dubidhā ghar bahutē gālē .
This duality has ruined so many homes.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਉਪਜੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤੀਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
satigur bājhah prīt n upajai bhagat ratē patīārā hē .13.
Without the True Guru, love does not well up. Imbued with devotional worship, the soul is satisfied. ||13||
ਸਾਕਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥
sākat māiā kau bah dhāvah .
The faithless cynics chase after Maya.
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
nām visār kahā sukh pāvah .
Forgetting the Naam, how can they find peace?
ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਖਪਹਿ ਖਪਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
trih gun antar khapah khapāvah nāhī pār utārā hē .14.
In the three qualities, they are destroyed; they cannot cross over to the other side. ||14||
ਕੂਕਰ ਸੂਕਰ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ॥
kūkar sūkar kahīah kūriārā .
The false are called pigs and dogs.
ਭਉਕਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਭਉ ਭਉ ਭਉ ਹਾਰਾ ॥
bhauk marah bhau bhau bhau hārā .
They bark themselves to death; they bark and bark and howl in fear.
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
mārū mahalā 1 .
Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਅਸੁਰ ਸਘਾਰਣ ਰਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥
asur saghāran rām hamārā .
My Lord is the Destroyer of demons.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਮਈਆ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
ghat ghat ramaīā rām piārā .
My Beloved Lord is pervading each and every heart.
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਝੂਠੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
man tan jhūthē kūr kamāvah duramat daragah hārā hē .15.
False in mind and body, they practice falsehood; through their evil-mindedness, they lose out in the Court of the Lord. ||15||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਮਨੂਆ ਟੇਕੈ ॥
satigur milai t manūā tēkai .
Meeting the True Guru, the mind is stabilized.
ਨਾਲੇ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖੀਐ ਮੂਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਿਖੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
nālē alakh n lakhīai mūlē guramukh likh vīchārā hē .1.
The unseen Lord is always with us, but He is not seen at all. The Gurmukh contemplates the record. ||1||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥
guramukh sādhū saran tumārī .
The Holy Gurmukh seeks Your Sanctuary.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇਕੈ ॥
rām nām dē saran parēkai .
One who seeks His Sanctuary is blessed with the Lord's Name.
ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥
har dhan nām amōlak dēvai har jas daragah piārā hē .16.
They are given the priceless wealth of the Lord's Name; singing His Praises, they are His beloveds in His court. ||16||
