ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
satigur dātā mukat karāē .
The True Guru, the Giver, grants liberation;
ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗ ਗਵਾਏ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
sabh rōg gavāē anmrit ras pāē .
all diseases are eradicated, and one is blessed with the Ambrosial Nectar.
ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝੀ ਠਰੁ ਸੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
jam jāgāt nāhī kar lāgai jis agan bujhī thar sīnā hē .5.
Death, the tax collector, does not impose any tax on one whose inner fire has been put out, whose heart is cool and tranquil. ||5||
ਕਾਇਆ ਹੰਸ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
kāiā hans prīt bah dhārī .
The body has developed a great love for the soul-swan.
ਓਹੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਓਹ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
ōh jōgī purakh ōh sundar nārī .
He is a Yogi, and she is a beautiful woman.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭੋਗੈ ਚੋਜ ਬਿਨੋਦੀ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਤੈ ਮਤਾ ਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
ahinis bhōgai chōj binōdī uth chalatai matā n kīnā hē .6.
Day and night, he enjoys her with delight, and then he arises and departs without consulting her. ||6||
ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਰਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਛਾਜੈ ॥
srisat upāi rahē prabh shājai .
Creating the Universe, God remains diffused throughout it.
ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਗਾਜੈ ॥
paun pānī baisantar gājai .
In the wind, water and fire, He vibrates and resounds.
ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਦੂਤ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
manūā dōlai dūt sangat mil sō pāē jō kish kīnā hē .7.
The mind wavers, keeping company with evil passions; one obtains the rewards of his own actions. ||7||
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਦੋਖ ਦੁਖ ਸਹੀਐ ॥
nām visār dōkh dukh sahīai .
Forgetting the Naam, one suffers the misery of his evil ways.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਚਲਣਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਹੀਐ ॥
hukam bhaiā chalanā kiu rahīai .
When the order to depart is issued, how can he remain here?
ਨਰਕ ਕੂਪ ਮਹਿ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਵੈ ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
narak kūp mah gōtē khāvai jiu jal tē bāhar mīnā hē .8.
He falls into the pit of hell, and suffers like a fish out of water. ||8||
ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਨਰਕ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਭੋਗਾਈਐ ॥
chaurāsīh narak sākat bhōgāīai .
The faithless cynic has to endure 8.4 million hellish incarnations.
ਜੈਸਾ ਕੀਚੈ ਤੈਸੋ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
jaisā kīchai taisō pāīai .
As he acts, so does he suffer.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਗ੍ਰਸਿ ਦੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
satigur bājhah mukat n hōī kirat bādhā gras dīnā hē .9.
Without the True Guru, there is no liberation. Bound and gagged by his own actions, he is helpless. ||9||
ਖੰਡੇ ਧਾਰ ਗਲੀ ਅਤਿ ਭੀੜੀ ॥
khandē dhār galī at bhīrī .
This path is very narrow, like the sharp edge of a sword.
ਲੇਖਾ ਲੀਜੈ ਤਿਲ ਜਿਉ ਪੀੜੀ ॥
lēkhā lījai til jiu pīrī .
When his account is read, he shall be crushed like the sesame seed in the mill.
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਤ ਬੇਲੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
māt pitā kalatr sut bēlī nāhī bin har ras mukat n kīnā hē .10.
Mother, father, spouse and child - none is anyone's friend in the end. Without the Lord's Love, no one is liberated. ||10||
ਮੀਤ ਸਖੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਜਗ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
mīt sakhē kētē jag māhī .
You may have many friends and companions in the world,
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
bin gur paramēsar kōī nāhī .
but without the Guru, the Transcendent Lord Incarnate, there is no one at all.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਰਾਇਣਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
gur kī sēvā mukat parāin anadin kīratan kīnā hē .11.
Service to the Guru is the way to liberation. Night and day, sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises. ||11||
ਕੂੜੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਹੁ ॥
kūr shōd sāchē kau dhāvah .
Abandon falsehood, and pursue the Truth,
ਜੋ ਇਛਹੁ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥
jō ishah sōī phal pāvah .
and you shall obtain the fruits of your desires.
ਸਾਚ ਵਖਰ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਲੈ ਲਾਹਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
sāch vakhar kē vāpārī viralē lai lāhā saudā kīnā hē .12.
Very few are those who trade in the merchandise of Truth. Those who deal in it, obtain the true profit. ||12||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਲੈ ਚਲਹੁ ॥
har har nām vakhar lai chalah .
Depart with the merchandise of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har,
ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਹਲਹੁ ॥
darasan pāvah sahaj mahalah .
and you shall intuitively obtain the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, in the Mansion of His Presence.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹਹਿ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ਇਉ ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਚੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
guramukh khōj lahah jan pūrē iu samadarasī chīnā hē .13.
The Gurmukhs search for Him and find Him; they are the perfect humble beings. In this way, they see Him, who looks upon all alike. ||13||
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਕੋ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
prabh bēant guramat kō pāvah .
God is endless; following the Guru's Teachings, some find Him.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਸਮਝਾਵਹਿ ॥
gur kai sabad man kau samajhāvah .
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they instruct their minds.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਇਉ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੈ ਲੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
satigur kī bānī sat sat kar mānah iu ātam rāmai līnā hē .14.
Accept as True, Perfectly True, the Word of the True Guru's Bani. In this way, you shall merge in the Lord, the Supreme Soul. ||14||
ਨਾਰਦ ਸਾਰਦ ਸੇਵਕ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
nārad sārad sēvak tērē .
Naarad and Saraswati are Your servants.
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਵਡਹੁ ਵਡੇਰੇ ॥
tribhavan sēvak vadah vadērē .
Your servants are the greatest of the great, throughout the three worlds.
ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਤੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
sabh tērī kudarat tū sir sir dātā sabh tērō kāran kīnā hē .15.
Your creative power permeates all; You are the Great Giver of all. You created the whole creation. ||15||
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
mārū mahalā 1 .
Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਹਰਿ ਸਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
har sā mīt nāhī mai kōī .
I have no other friend like the Lord.
ਜਿਨਿ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੀਆ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮੋਈ ॥
jin tan man dīā surat samōī .
He gave me body and mind, and infused consciousness into my being.
ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਿ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਸੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
sarab jīā pratipāl samālē sō antar dānā bīnā hē .1.
He cherishes and cares for all beings; He is deep within, the wise, all-knowing Lord. ||1||
ਇਕਿ ਦਰਿ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਦਰਦੁ ਵਞਾਏ ॥
ik dar sēvah darad vañāē .
Some serve at Your Door, and their sufferings are dispelled.
ਓਇ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਛਡਾਏ ॥
ōi daragah paidhē satigurū shadāē .
They are robed with honor in the Court of the Lord, and emancipated by the True Guru.
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਹਮ ਹੰਸ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
gur saravar ham hans piārē .
The Guru is the sacred pool, and I am His beloved swan.
ਸਾਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਰਤਨ ਲਾਲ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
sāgar mah ratan lāl bah sārē .
In the ocean, there are so many jewels and rubies.
ਹਉਮੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੋੜੇ ਚਿਤੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਚਲਣਿ ਨ ਦੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥
haumai bandhan satigur tōrē chit chanchal chalan n dīnā hē .16.
The True Guru breaks the bonds of egotism, and restrains the fickle consciousness. ||16||
ਮੋਤੀ ਮਾਣਕ ਹੀਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਤ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਭੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
mōtī mānak hīrā har jas gāvat man tan bhīnā hē .2.
The Lord's Praises are pearls, gems and diamonds. Singing His Praises, my mind and body are drenched with His Love. ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਹੁ ਅਗਾਧਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥
har agam agāh agādh nirālā .
The Lord is inaccessible, inscrutable, unfathomable and unattached.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਚੀਨਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਾਈ ॥
satigur milah chīnah bidh sāī .
Meet the True Guru, and search for the way,
ਜਿਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥
jit prabh pāvah ganat n kāī .
by which you may find God, and not have to answer for your account.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਭੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੭॥੨॥੮॥
haumai mār karah gur sēvā jan nānak har rang bhīnā hē .17.2.8.
Subdue your egotism, and serve the Guru; O servant Nanak, you shall be drenched with the Lord's Love. ||17||2||8||
ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥
har ant n pāīai gur gōpālā .
The Lord's limits cannot be found; the Guru is the Lord of the World.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਤਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਰੰਗਿ ਲੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
satigur mat tārē tāranahārā mēl laē rang līnā hē .3.
Through the Teachings of the True Guru, the Lord carries us across to the other side. He unites in His Union those who are colored by His Love. ||3||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਨੇਹੀ ॥
satigur bājhah mukat kinēhī .
Without the True Guru, how can anyone be liberated?
ਓਹੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਰਾਮ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥
ōh ād jugādī rām sanēhī .
He has been the Friend of the Lord, from the very beginning of time, and all throughout the ages.
ਦਰਗਹ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਬਖਸੇ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
daragah mukat karē kar kirapā bakhasē avagun kīnā hē .4.
By His Grace, He grants liberation in His Court; He forgives them for their sins. ||4||
