ਛੋਡਿਹੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਾਤਿ ਪਰਾਈ ॥
shōdih nindā tāt parāī .
Abandon slander and envy of others.
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਸਾਤਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥
par par dajhah sāt n āī .
Reading and studying, they burn, and do not find tranquility.
ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਹੁ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
mil satasangat nām salāhah ātam rām sakhāī hē .7.
Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The Lord, the Supreme Soul, shall be your helper and companion. ||7||
ਛੋਡਹੁ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥
shōdah kām krōdh buriāī .
Abandon sexual desire, anger and wickedness.
ਹਉਮੈ ਧੰਧੁ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਲੰਪਟਾਈ ॥
haumai dhandh shōdah lanpatāī .
Abandon your involvement in egotistical affairs and conflicts.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰਹੁ ਤਾ ਉਬਰਹੁ ਇਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
satigur saran parah tā ubarah iu tarīai bhavajal bhāī hē .8.
If you seek the Sanctuary of the True Guru, then you shall be saved. In this way you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean, O Siblings of Destiny. ||8||
ਆਗੈ ਬਿਮਲ ਨਦੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਝੇਲਾ ॥
āgai bimal nadī agan bikh jhēlā .
In the hereafter, you shall have to cross over the fiery river of poisonous flames.
ਤਿਥੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਉ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥
tithai avar n kōī jīu ikēlā .
No one else will be there; your soul shall be all alone.
ਭੜ ਭੜ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਦੇ ਲਹਰੀ ਪੜਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
bhar bhar agan sāgar dē laharī par dajhah manamukh tāī hē .9.
The ocean of fire spits out waves of searing flames; the self-willed manmukhs fall into it, and are roasted there. ||9||
ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੈ ॥
gur pah mukat dān dē bhānai .
Liberation comes from the Guru; He grants this blessing by the Pleasure of His Will.
ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jin pāiā sōī bidh jānai .
He alone knows the way, who obtains it.
ਜਿਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
jin pāiā tin pūshah bhāī sukh satigur sēv kamāī hē .10.
So ask one who has obtained it, O Siblings of Destiny. Serve the True Guru, and find peace. ||10||
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਰਝਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਬੇਕਾਰਾ ॥
gur bin urajh marah bēkārā .
Without the Guru, he dies entangled in sin and corruption.
ਜਮੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰਾ ॥
jam sir mārē karē khuārā .
The Messenger of Death smashes his head and humiliates him.
ਬਾਧੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਰ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਡੂਬਹਿ ਨਿੰਦ ਪਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
bādhē mukat nāhī nar nindak dūbah nind parāī hē .11.
The slanderous person is not freed of his bonds; he is drowned, slandering others. ||11||
ਬੋਲਹੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਹੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ॥
bōlah sāch pashānah andar .
So speak the Truth, and realize the Lord deep within.
ਦੂਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਨੰਦਰਿ ॥
dūr nāhī dēkhah kar nandar .
He is not far away; look, and see Him.
ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ਇਉ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
bighan nāhī guramukh tar tārī iu bhavajal pār langhāī hē .12.
No obstacles shall block your way; become Gurmukh, and cross over to the other side. This is the way to cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||12||
ਦੇਹੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ॥
dēhī andar nām nivāsī .
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within the body.
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥
āpē karatā hai abināsī .
The Creator Lord is eternal and imperishable.
ਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਜਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
nā jīu marai n māriā jāī kar dēkhai sabad rajāī hē .13.
The soul does not die, and it cannot be killed; God creates and watches over all. Through the Word of the Shabad, His Will is manifest. ||13||
ਓਹੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥
ōh niramal hai nāhī andhiārā .
He is immaculate, and has no darkness.
ਓਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਬਹੈ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥
ōh āpē takhat bahai sachiārā .
The True Lord Himself sits upon His throne.
ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜੇ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਆਈ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
sākat kūrē bandh bhavāīah mar janamah āī jāī hē .14.
The faithless cynics are bound and gagged, and forced to wander in reincarnation. They die, and are reborn, and continue coming and going. ||14||
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
gur kē sēvak satigur piārē .
The Guru's servants are the Beloveds of the True Guru.
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥
āpē karatā purakh bidhātā .
He Himself is the Creator Lord, the Architect of Destiny.
ਓਇ ਬੈਸਹਿ ਤਖਤਿ ਸੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
ōi baisah takhat s sabad vīchārē .
Contemplating the Shabad, they sit upon His throne.
ਤਤੁ ਲਹਹਿ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
tat lahah antaragat jānah satasangat sāch vadāī hē .15.
They realize the essence of reality, and know the state of their inner being. This is the true glorious greatness of those who join the Sat Sangat. ||15||
ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
jin āpē āp upāi pashātā .
He evaluates those whom He Himself has created.
ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
āpē satigur āpē sēvak āpē srisat upāī hē .1.
He Himself is the True Guru, and He Himself is the servant; He Himself created the Universe. ||1||
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਜਨੁ ਪਿਤਰਾ ਤਾਰੇ ॥
āp tarai jan pitarā tārē .
He Himself saves His humble servant, and saves his ancestors as well.
ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥
sangat mukat s pār utārē .
His companions are liberated; He carries them across.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਲਾਲਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੬॥
nānak tis kā lālā gōlā jin guramukh har liv lāī hē .16.6.
Nanak is the servant and slave of that Gurmukh who lovingly focuses his consciousness on the Lord. ||16||6||
ਆਪੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੂਰੇ ॥
āpē nērai nāhī dūrē .
He is near at hand, not far away.
ਬੂਝਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ॥
būjhah guramukh sē jan pūrē .
The Gurmukhs understand Him; perfect are those humble beings.
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਏਹ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
tin kī sangat ahinis lāhā gur sangat ēh vadāī hē .2.
Associating with them night and day is profitable. This is the glorious greatness of associating with the Guru. ||2||
ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸੰਤ ਭਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
jug jug sant bhalē prabh tērē .
Throughout the ages, Your Saints are holy and sublime, O God.
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸੇਰੇ ॥
har gun gāvah rasan rasērē .
They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, savoring it with their tongues.
ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਿੰਤ ਪਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
usatat karah parahar dukh dālad jin nāhī chint parāī hē .3.
They chant His Praises, and their pain and poverty are taken away; they are not afraid of anyone else. ||3||
ਓਇ ਜਾਗਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਨ ਸੂਤੇ ਦੀਸਹਿ ॥
ōi jāgat rahah n sūtē dīsah .
They remain awake and aware, and do not appear to sleep.
ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਰੀਸਹਿ ॥
sangat kul tārē sāch parīsah .
They serve up Truth, and so save their companions and relatives.
ਕਲਿਮਲ ਮੈਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਓਇ ਰਹਹਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
kalimal mail nāhī tē niramal ōi rahah bhagat liv lāī hē .4.
They are not stained with the filth of sins; they are immaculate and pure, and remain absorbed in loving devotional worship. ||4||
ਬੂਝਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
būjhah har jan satigur bānī .
O humble servants of the Lord, understand the Word of the Guru's Bani.
ਏਹੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਸਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਦੇਹ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ॥
ēh jōban sās hai dēh purānī .
This youth, breath and body shall pass away.
ਆਜੁ ਕਾਲਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਧਿਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
āj kāl mar jāīai prānī har jap jap ridai dhiāī hē .5.
O mortal, you shall die today or tomorrow; chant, and meditate on the Lord within your heart. ||5||
ਛੋਡਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕੂੜ ਕਬਾੜਾ ॥
shōdah prānī kūr kabārā .
O mortal, abandon falsehood and your worthless ways.
ਕੂੜੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਾਲੁ ਉਛਾਹਾੜਾ ॥
kūr mārē kāl ushāhārā .
Death viciously kills the false beings.
ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਹੁ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਚੈ ਪਚਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
sākat kūr pachah man haumai duh mārag pachai pachāī hē .6.
The faithless cynic is ruined through falsehood and his egotistical mind.On the path of duality, he rots away and decomposes. ||6||
