ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੁਲੀ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਏ ॥
nāvah bhulī chōtā khāē .
Wandering from the Name, he endures beatings.
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥
bahut siānap bharam n jāē .
Even great cleverness does not dispel doubt.
ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਚੇਤ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਅਜਗਰਿ ਭਾਰਿ ਲਦਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
pach pach muē achēt n chētah ajagar bhār ladāī hē .8.
The unconscious fool does not remain conscious of the Lord; he putrifies and rots away to death, carrying his heavy load of sin. ||8||
ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਦ ਬਿਰੋਧਹਿ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
bin bād birōdhah kōī nāhī .
No one is free of conflict and strife.
ਮੈ ਦੇਖਾਲਿਹੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ॥
mai dēkhālih tis sālāhī .
Show me anyone who is, and I will praise him.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
man tan arap milai jagajīvan har siu banat banāī hē .9.
Dedicating mind and body to God, one meets the Lord, the Life of the World, and becomes just like Him. ||9||
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
prabh kī gat mit kōi n pāvai .
No one knows the state and extent of God.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਵਡਾ ਕਹਾਇ ਵਡਾਈ ਖਾਵੈ ॥
jē kō vadā kahāi vadāī khāvai .
Whoever calls himself great, will be eaten by his greatness.
ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਦਾਤੀ ਸਗਲੀ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
sāchē sāhib tōt n dātī sagalī tinah upāī hē .10.
There is no lack of gifts of our True Lord and Master. He created all. ||10||
ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੇ ॥
vadī vadiāī vēparavāhē .
Great is the glorious greatness of the independent Lord.
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਦਾਨੁ ਸਮਾਹੇ ॥
āp upāē dān samāhē .
He Himself created, and gives sustanance to all.
ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
āp daiāl dūr nahī dātā miliā sahaj rajāī hē .11.
The Merciful Lord is not far away; the Great Giver spontaneously unites with Himself, by His Will. ||11||
ਇਕਿ ਸੋਗੀ ਇਕਿ ਰੋਗਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ॥
ik sōgī ik rōg viāpē .
Some are sad, and some are afflicted with disease.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ॥
jō kish karē s āpē āpē .
Whatever God does, He does by Himself.
ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਉ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਅਨਹਦਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
bhagat bhāu gur kī mat pūrī anahad sabad lakhāī hē .12.
Through loving devotion, and the Perfect Teachings of the Guru, the unstruck sound current of the Shabad is realized. ||12||
ਇਕਿ ਨਾਗੇ ਭੂਖੇ ਭਵਹਿ ਭਵਾਏ ॥
ik nāgē bhūkhē bhavah bhavāē .
Some wander and roam around, hungry and naked.
ਇਕਿ ਹਠੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਨ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
ik hath kar marah n kīmat pāē .
Some act in stubbornness and die, but do not know the value of God.
ਗਤਿ ਅਵਿਗਤ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
gat avigat kī sār n jānai būjhai sabad kamāī hē .13.
They do not know the difference between good and bad; this is understood only through the practice of the Word of the Shabad. ||13||
ਇਕਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਹਿ ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਵਹਿ ॥
ik tīrath nāvah ann n khāvah .
Some bathe at sacred shrines and refuse to eat.
ਇਕਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲਾਵਹਿ ਦੇਹ ਖਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
ik agan jalāvah dēh khapāvah .
Some torment their bodies in burning fire.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
rām nām bin mukat n hōī kit bidh pār langhāī hē .14.
Without the Lord's Name, liberation is not obtained; how can anyone cross over? ||14||
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਛੋਡਹਿ ਉਝੜਿ ਜਾਈ ॥
guramat shōdah ujhar jāī .
Abandoning the Guru's Teachings, some wander in the wilderness.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪੈ ਅਵਾਈ ॥
manamukh rām n japai avāī .
The self-willed manmukhs are destitute; they do not meditate on the Lord.
ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਬੂਡਹਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਕੂੜਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਬੈਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
pach pach būdah kūr kamāvah kūr kāl bairāī hē .15.
They are ruined, destroyed and drowned from practicing falsehood; death is the enemy of the false. ||15||
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
hukamē āvai hukamē jāvai .
By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, they come, and by the Hukam of His Command, they go.
ਬੂਝੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੋ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
būjhai hukam sō sāch samāvai .
One who realizes His Hukam, merges in the True Lord.
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
mārū mahalā 1 .
Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਸਾਚੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
sāchai mēlē sabad milāē .
The True Lord unites with those who are united with the Word of the Shabad.
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
jā tis bhānā sahaj samāē .
When it pleases Him, we intuitively merge with Him.
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰੀ ਪਰਮੇਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
tribhavan jōt dharī paramēsar avar n dūjā bhāī hē .1.
The Light of the Transcendent Lord pervades the three worlds; there is no other at all, O Siblings of Destiny. ||1||
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੫॥
nānak sāch milai man bhāvai guramukh kār kamāī hē .16.5.
O Nanak, he merges in the True Lord, and his mind is pleased with the Lord. The Gurmukhs do His work. ||16||5||
ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
jis kē chākar tis kī sēvā .
I am His servant; I serve Him.
ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥
sabad patījai alakh abhēvā .
He is unknowable and mysterious; He is pleased by the Shabad.
ਭਗਤਾ ਕਾ ਗੁਣਕਾਰੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
bhagatā kā gunakārī karatā bakhas laē vadiāī hē .2.
The Creator is the Benefactor of His devotees. He forgives them - such is His greatness. ||2||
ਦੇਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਸਾਚੇ ॥
dēdē tōt n āvai sāchē .
The True Lord gives and gives; His blessings never run short.
ਲੈ ਲੈ ਮੁਕਰਿ ਪਉਦੇ ਕਾਚੇ ॥
lai lai mukar paudē kāchē .
The false ones receive, and then deny having received.
ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਨ ਰੀਝਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
mūl n būjhah sāch n rījhah dūjai bharam bhulāī hē .3.
They do not understand their origins, they are not pleased with the Truth, and so they wander in duality and doubt. ||3||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
guramukh jāg rahē din rātī .
The Gurmukhs remain awake and aware, day and night.
ਸਾਚੇ ਕੀ ਲਿਵ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥
sāchē kī liv guramat jātī .
Following the Guru's Teachings, they know the Love of the True Lord.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੋਇ ਰਹੇ ਸੇ ਲੂਟੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
manamukh sōi rahē sē lūtē guramukh sābat bhāī hē .4.
The self-willed manmukhs remain asleep, and are plundered. The Gurmukhs remain safe and sound, O Siblings of Destiny. ||4||
ਕੂੜੇ ਆਵੈ ਕੂੜੇ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
kūrē āvai kūrē jāvai .
The false come, and the false go;
ਕੂੜੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
kūrē rātī kūr kamāvai .
imbued with falsehood, they practice only falsehood.
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
sabad milē sē daragah paidhē guramukh surat samāī hē .5.
Those who are imbued with the Shabad are robed in honor in the Court of the Lord; the Gurmukhs focus their consciousness on Him. ||5||
ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਠਗੀ ਠਗਵਾੜੀ ॥
kūr muthī thagī thagavārī .
The false are cheated, and robbed by the robbers.
ਜਿਉ ਵਾੜੀ ਓਜਾੜਿ ਉਜਾੜੀ ॥
jiu vārī ōjār ujārī .
The garden is laid waste, like the rough wilderness.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਦਿ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
nām binā kish sād n lāgai har bisariai dukh pāī hē .6.
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, nothing tastes sweet; forgetting the Lord, they suffer in sorrow. ||6||
ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਆਘਾਈ ॥
bhōjan sāch milai āghāī .
Receiving the food of Truth, one is satisfied.
ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਸਾਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
nām ratan sāchī vadiāī .
True is the glorious greatness of the jewel of the Name.
ਚੀਨੈ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
chīnai āp pashānai sōī jōtī jōt milāī hē .7.
One who understands his own self, realizes the Lord. His light merges into the Light. ||7||
