ਸਚੈ ਊਪਰਿ ਅਵਰ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
sachai ūpar avar n dīsai sāchē kīmat pāī hē .8.
I cannot see any other above the True Lord. The True Lord does the appraisal. ||8||
ਐਥੈ ਗੋਇਲੜਾ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰੇ ॥
aithai gōilarā din chārē .
In this green pasture, the mortal stays only a few days.
ਖੇਲੁ ਤਮਾਸਾ ਧੁੰਧੂਕਾਰੇ ॥
khēl tamāsā dhundhūkārē .
He plays and frolics in utter darkness.
ਬਾਜੀ ਖੇਲਿ ਗਏ ਬਾਜੀਗਰ ਜਿਉ ਨਿਸਿ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਭਖਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
bājī khēl gaē bājīgar jiu nis supanai bhakhalāī hē .9.
The jugglers have staged their show, and left, like people mumbling in a dream. ||9||
ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਤਖਤਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
tin kau takhat milī vadiāī .
They alone are blessed with glorious greatness at the Lord's throne,
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
nirabhau man vasiā liv lāī .
who enshrine the fearless Lord in their minds, and lovingly center themselves on Him.
ਖੰਡੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡੀ ਪਾਤਾਲੀ ਪੁਰੀਈ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
khandī brahamandī pātālī purīī tribhavan tārī lāī hē .10.
In the galaxies and solar systems, nether regions, celestial realms and the three worlds, the Lord is in the primal void of deep absorption. ||10||
ਸਾਚੀ ਨਗਰੀ ਤਖਤੁ ਸਚਾਵਾ ॥
sāchī nagarī takhat sachāvā .
True is the village, and true is the throne,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਾ ॥
guramukh sāch milai sukh pāvā .
of those Gurmukhs who meet with the True Lord, and find peace.
ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਤਖਤਿ ਵਡਾਈ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਣਤ ਗਵਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
sāchē sāchai takhat vadāī haumai ganat gavāī hē .11.
In Truth, seated upon the true throne, they are blessed with glorious greatness; their egotism is eradicated, along with the calculation of their account. ||11||
ਗਣਤ ਗਣੀਐ ਸਹਸਾ ਜੀਐ ॥
ganat ganīai sahasā jīai .
Calculating its account, the soul becomes anxious.
ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਦੂਐ ਤੀਐ ॥
kiu sukh pāvai dūai tīai .
How can one find peace, through duality and the three gunas - the three qualities?
ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
niramal ēk niranjan dātā gur pūrē tē pat pāī hē .12.
The One Lord is immaculate and formless, the Great Giver; through the Perfect Guru, honor is obtained. ||12||
ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
jug jug viralī guramukh jātā .
In each and every age, very rare are those who, as Gurmukh, realize the Lord.
ਸਾਚਾ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
sāchā rav rahiā man rātā .
Their minds are imbued with the True, all-pervading Lord.
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਓਟ ਗਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
tis kī ōt gahī sukh pāiā man tan mail n kāī hē .13.
Seeking His Shelter, they find peace, and their minds and bodies are not stained with filth. ||13||
ਜੀਭ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
jībh rasāin sāchai rātī .
Their tongues are imbued with the True Lord, the source of nectar;
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੰਗੀ ਭਉ ਨ ਭਰਾਤੀ ॥
har prabh sangī bhau n bharātī .
abiding with the Lord God, they have no fear or doubt.
ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਸ੍ਰੋਤ ਰਜੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
sravan srōt rajē gurabānī jōtī jōt milāī hē .14.
Hearing the Word of the Guru's Bani, their ears are satisfied, and their light merges into the Light. ||14||
ਰਖਿ ਰਖਿ ਪੈਰ ਧਰੇ ਪਉ ਧਰਣਾ ॥
rakh rakh pair dharē pau dharanā .
Carefully, carefully, I place my feet upon the ground.
ਜਤ ਕਤ ਦੇਖਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥
jat kat dēkhau tērī saranā .
Wherever I go, I behold Your Sanctuary.
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੂਹੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
dukh sukh dēh tūhai man bhāvah tujh hī siu ban āī hē .15.
Whether You grant me pain or pleasure, You are pleasing to my mind. I am in harmony with You. ||15||
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਕੋ ਬੇਲੀ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
ant kāl kō bēlī nāhī .
No one is anyone's companion or helper at the very last moment;
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ॥
guramukh jātā tudh sālāhī .
as Gurmukh, I realize You and praise You.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੩॥
nānak nām ratē bairāgī nij ghar tārī lāī hē .16.3.
O Nanak, imbued with the Naam, I am detached; in the home of my own self deep within, I am absorbed in the primal void of deep meditation. ||16||3||
ਦੂਜੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅੰਨੀ ਬੋਲੀ ॥
dūjī duramat annī bōlī .
In duality and evil-mindedness, the soul-bride is blind and deaf.
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕੀ ਕਚੀ ਚੋਲੀ ॥
kām krōdh kī kachī chōlī .
She wears the dress of sexual desire and anger.
ਘਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਛੋਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
ghar var sahaj n jānai shōhar bin pir nīd n pāī hē .1.
Her Husband Lord is within the home of her own heart, but she does not know Him; without her Husband Lord, she cannot go to sleep. ||1||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲੈ ਭੜਕਾਰੇ ॥
antar agan jalai bharakārē .
The great fire of desire blazes within her.
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਤਕੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਚਾਰੇ ॥
manamukh takē kundā chārē .
The self-willed manmukh looks around in the four directions.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਾਚੇ ਹਾਥਿ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
bin satigur sēvē kiu sukh pāīai sāchē hāth vadāī hē .2.
Without serving the True Guru, how can she find peace? Glorious greatness rests in the hands of the True Lord. ||2||
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥
kām krōdh ahankār nivārē .
Eradicating sexual desire, anger and egotism,
ਤਸਕਰ ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥
tasakar panch sabad sanghārē .
she destroys the five thieves through the Word of the Shabad.
ਗਿਆਨ ਖੜਗੁ ਲੈ ਮਨ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝੈ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
giān kharag lai man siu lūjhai manasā manah samāī hē .3.
Taking up the sword of spiritual wisdom, she struggles with her mind, and hope and desire are smoothed over in her mind. ||3||
ਮਾ ਕੀ ਰਕਤੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਬਿਦੁ ਧਾਰਾ ॥
mā kī rakat pitā bid dhārā .
From the union of the mother's egg and the father's sperm,
ਮੂਰਤਿ ਸੂਰਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਆਪਾਰਾ ॥
mūrat sūrat kar āpārā .
the form of infinite beauty has been created.
ਜੋਤਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਜੇਤੀ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਤੂ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਭ ਠਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
jōt dāt jētī sabh tērī tū karatā sabh thāī hē .4.
The blessings of light all come from You; You are the Creator Lord, pervading everywhere. ||4||
ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਕੀਆ ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
tujh hī kīā janman maranā .
You have created birth and death.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਮਝ ਪੜੀ ਕਿਆ ਡਰਣਾ ॥
gur tē samajh parī kiā daranā .
Why should anyone fear, if they come to understand through the Guru?
ਤੂ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਸਰੀਰਹੁ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
tū daiāl daiā kar dēkhah dukh darad sarīrah jāī hē .5.
When You, O Merciful Lord, look with Your kindness, then pain and suffering leave the body. ||5||
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸਿ ਰਹੇ ਭਉ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
nij ghar bais rahē bhau khāiā .
One who sits in the home of his own self, eats his own fears.
ਧਾਵਤ ਰਾਖੇ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥
dhāvat rākhē thāk rahāiā .
He quiets and holds his wandering mind still.
ਕਮਲ ਬਿਗਾਸ ਹਰੇ ਸਰ ਸੁਭਰ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
kamal bigās harē sar subhar ātam rām sakhāī hē .6.
His heart-lotus blossoms forth in the overflowing green pool, and the Lord of his soul becomes his companion and helper. ||6||
ਮਰਣੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਏ ॥
maran likhāi mandal mah āē .
With their death already ordained, mortals come into this world.
ਕਿਉ ਰਹੀਐ ਚਲਣਾ ਪਰਥਾਏ ॥
kiu rahīai chalanā parathāē .
How can they remain here? They have to go to the world beyond.
ਸਚਾ ਅਮਰੁ ਸਚੇ ਅਮਰਾ ਪੁਰਿ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
sachā amar sachē amarā pur sō sach milai vadāī hē .7.
True is the Lord's Command; the true ones dwell in the eternal city. The True Lord blesses them with glorious greatness. ||7||
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
āp upāiā jagat sabāiā .
He Himself created the whole world.
ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
jin siriā tin dhandhai lāiā .
The One who made it, assigns the tasks to it.
