ਸਚੁ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੀਤਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਪਾਟੈ ॥
sach purānā hōvai nāhī sītā kadē n pātai .
But the Truth does not grow old; and when it is stitched, it is never torn again.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਤਿਚਰੁ ਜਾਪੀ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੧॥
nānak sāhib sachō sachā tichar jāpī jāpai .1.
O Nanak, the Lord and Master is the Truest of the True. While we meditate on Him, we see Him. ||1||

First Mehl:
ਸਚ ਕੀ ਕਾਤੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਭੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
sach kī kātī sach sabh sār .
The knife is Truth, and its steel is totally True.
ਘਾੜਤ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
ghārat tis kī apar apār .
Its workmanship is incomparably beautiful.
ਸਬਦੇ ਸਾਣ ਰਖਾਈ ਲਾਇ ॥
sabadē sān rakhāī lāi .
It is sharpened on the grindstone of the Shabad.
ਗੁਣ ਕੀ ਥੇਕੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
gun kī thēkai vich samāi .
It is placed in the scabbard of virtue.
ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਕੁਠਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੇਖੁ ॥
tis dā kuthā hōvai sēkh .
If the Shaykh is killed with that,
ਲੋਹੂ ਲਬੁ ਨਿਕਥਾ ਵੇਖੁ ॥
lōhū lab nikathā vēkh .
then the blood of greed will spill out.
ਹੋਇ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਲਗੈ ਹਕਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
hōi halāl lagai hak jāi .
One who is slaughtered in this ritualistic way, will be attached to the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਦਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
nānak dar dīdār samāi .2.
O Nanak, at the Lord's door, he is absorbed into His Blessed Vision. ||2||

First Mehl:
ਕਮਰਿ ਕਟਾਰਾ ਬੰਕੁੜਾ ਬੰਕੇ ਕਾ ਅਸਵਾਰੁ ॥
kamar katārā bankurā bankē kā asavār .
A beautiful dagger hangs by your waist, and you ride such a beautiful horse.
ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਮਤੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਭਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
garab n kījai nānakā mat sir āvai bhār .3.
But don't be too proud; O Nanak, you may fall head first to the ground. ||3||

Pauree:
ਸੋ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਲੈ ॥
sō satasangat sabad milai jō guramukh chalai .
They alone walk as Gurmukh, who receive the Shabad in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.
ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸੇ ਸਚੇ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਖਰਚੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ॥
sach dhiāin sē sachē jin har kharach dhan palai .
Meditating on the True Lord, they become truthful; they carry in their robes the supplies of the Lord's wealth.
ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਦੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਚਲੈ ॥
bhagat sōhan gun gāvadē guramat achalai .
The devotees look beautiful, singing the Praises of the Lord; following the Guru's Teachings, they become stable and unchanging.
ਰਤਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਲੈ ॥
ratan bīchār man vasiā gur kai sabad bhalai .
They enshrine the jewel of contemplation within their minds, and the most sublime Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧੯॥
āpē mēl milāidā āpē dēi vadiāī .19.
He Himself unites in His Union; He Himself grants glorious greatness. ||19||
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਵੇਲਿ ਪਿੰਞਾਇਆ ਕਤਿ ਵੁਣਾਇਆ ॥
vēl pinñāiā kat vunāiā .
The cotton is ginned, woven and spun;
ਕਟਿ ਕੁਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਖੁੰਬਿ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥
kat kut kar khunb charāiā .
the cloth is laid out, washed and bleached white.
ਲੋਹਾ ਵਢੇ ਦਰਜੀ ਪਾੜੇ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਸੀਵੈ ॥
lōhā vadhē darajī pārē sūī dhāgā sīvai .
The tailor cuts it with his scissors, and sews it with his thread.
ਇਉ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਟੀ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸੀਪੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵਤ ਜੀਵੈ ॥
iu pat pātī siphatī sīpai nānak jīvat jīvai .
Thus, the torn and tattered honor is sewn up again, through the Lord's Praise, O Nanak, and one lives the true life.
ਹੋਇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਕਪੜੁ ਪਾਟੈ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਗੰਢੈ ॥
hōi purānā kapar pātai sūī dhāgā gandhai .
Becoming worn, the cloth is torn; with needle and thread it is sewn up again.
ਮਾਹੁ ਪਖੁ ਕਿਹੁ ਚਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੰਢੈ ॥
māh pakh kih chalai nāhī gharī muhat kish handhai .
It will not last for a month, or even a week. It barely lasts for an hour, or even a moment.
