ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੀਰੈ ਕੋ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
vin gur pīrai kō thāi n pāī .
Without the Guru or a spiritual teacher, no one is accepted.
ਰਾਹੁ ਦਸਾਇ ਓਥੈ ਕੋ ਜਾਇ ॥
rāh dasāi ōthai kō jāi .
They may be shown the way, but only a few go there.
ਕਰਣੀ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਭਿਸਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
karanī bājhah bhisat n pāi .
Without the karma of good actions, heaven is not attained.
ਜੋਗੀ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਦਸਾਈ ॥
jōgī kai ghar jugat dasāī .
The Way of Yoga is demonstrated in the Yogi's monastery.
ਤਿਤੁ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਕਨਿ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਪਾਈ ॥
tit kāran kan mundrā pāī .
They wear ear-rings to show the way.
ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਪਾਇ ਫਿਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
mundrā pāi phirai sansār .
Wearing ear-rings, they wander around the world.
ਜਿਥੈ ਕਿਥੈ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
jithai kithai sirajanahār .
The Creator Lord is everywhere.
ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਤੇ ਵਾਟਾਊ ॥
jētē jī tētē vātāū .
There are as many travellers as there are beings.
ਚੀਰੀ ਆਈ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਕਾਊ ॥
chīrī āī dhil n kāū .
When one's death warrant is issued, there is no delay.
ਏਥੈ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੁ ਜਾਇ ਸਿਞਾਣੈ ॥
ēthai jānai s jāi siñānai .
One who knows the Lord here, realizes Him there as well.
ਹੋਰੁ ਫਕੜੁ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੈ ॥
hōr phakar hindū musalamānai .
Others, whether Hindu or Muslim, are just babbling.
ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਦਰਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
sabhanā kā dar lēkhā hōi .
Everyone's account is read in the Court of the Lord;
ਕਰਣੀ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਤਰੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
karanī bājhah tarai n kōi .
without the karma of good actions, no one crosses over.
ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
sachō sach vakhānai kōi .
One who speaks the True Name of the True Lord,
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗੈ ਪੁਛ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
nānak agai push n hōi .2.
O Nanak, is not called to account hereafter. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਗੜੁ ॥
har kā mandar ākhīai kāiā kōt gar .
The fortress of the body is called the Mansion of the Lord.
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਲਾਲ ਜਵੇਹਰੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੜੁ ॥
andar lāl javēharī guramukh har nām par .
The rubies and gems are found within it; the Gurmukh chants the Name of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਅਤਿ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਿੜੁ ॥
har kā mandar sarīr at sōhanā har har nām dir .
The body, the Mansion of the Lord, is very beautiful, when the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is implanted deep within.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਇਅਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਨਿਤ ਕੜੁ ॥
manamukh āp khuāian māiā mōh nit kar .
The self-willed manmukhs ruin themselves; they boil continuously in attachment to Maya.
ਸਭਨਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੧॥
sabhanā sāhib ēk hai pūrai bhāg pāiā jāī .11.
The One Lord is the Master of all. He is found only by perfect destiny. ||11||

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਸਤੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਤੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
satī pāp kar sat kamāh .
Men of charity gather wealth by committing sins, and then give it away in donations to charity.
ਗੁਰ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਘਰਿ ਦੇਵਣ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
gur dīkhiā ghar dēvan jāh .
Their spiritual teachers go to their homes to instruct them.
ਇਸਤਰੀ ਪੁਰਖੈ ਖਟਿਐ ਭਾਉ ॥
isatarī purakhai khatiai bhāu .
The woman loves the man only for his wealth;
ਭਾਵੈ ਆਵਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
bhāvai āvau bhāvai jāu .
they come and go as they please.
ਸਾਸਤੁ ਬੇਦੁ ਨ ਮਾਨੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
sāsat bēd n mānai kōi .
No one obeys the Shaastras or the Vedas.
ਆਪੋ ਆਪੈ ਪੂਜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
āpō āpai pūjā hōi .
Everyone worships himself.
ਕਾਜੀ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਬਹੈ ਨਿਆਇ ॥
kājī hōi kai bahai niāi .
Becoming judges, they sit and administer justice.
ਫੇਰੇ ਤਸਬੀ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥
phērē tasabī karē khudāi .
They chant on their malas, and call upon God.
ਵਢੀ ਲੈ ਕੈ ਹਕੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
vadhī lai kai hak gavāē .
They accept bribes, and block justice.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਪੁਛੈ ਤਾ ਪੜਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
jē kō pushai tā par sunāē .
If someone asks them, they read quotations from their books.
ਤੁਰਕ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਕਨਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥
turak mantr kan ridai samāh .
The Muslim scriptures are in their ears and in their hearts.
ਲੋਕ ਮੁਹਾਵਹਿ ਚਾੜੀ ਖਾਹਿ ॥
lōk muhāvah chārī khāh .
They plunder the people, and engage in gossip and flattery.
ਚਉਕਾ ਦੇ ਕੈ ਸੁਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
chaukā dē kai suchā hōi .
They anoint their kitchens to try to become pure.
ਐਸਾ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
aisā hindū vēkhah kōi .
Behold, such is the Hindu.
ਜੋਗੀ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਜਟਾ ਬਿਭੂਤ ॥
jōgī girahī jatā bibhūt .
The Yogi, with matted hair and ashes on his body, has become a householder.
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਪੂਤ ॥
āgai pāshai rōvah pūt .
The children weep in front of him and behind him.
ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
jōg n pāiā jugat gavāī .
He does not attain Yoga - he has lost his way.
ਕਿਤੁ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਈ ਪਾਈ ॥
kit kāran sir shāī pāī .
Why does he apply ashes to his forehead?
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਲਿ ਕਾ ਏਹੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
nānak kal kā ēh paravān .
O Nanak, this is the sign of the Dark Age of Kali Yuga;
ਆਪੇ ਆਖਣੁ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੧॥
āpē ākhan āpē jān .1.
everyone says that he himself knows. ||1||

First Mehl:
ਹਿੰਦੂ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਆਵੈ ॥
hindū kai ghar hindū āvai .
The Hindu comes to the house of a Hindu.
ਸੂਤੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਪੜਿ ਗਲਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
sūt janēū par gal pāvai .
He puts the sacred thread around his neck and reads the scriptures.
ਸੂਤੁ ਪਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥
sūt pāi karē buriāī .
He puts on the thread, but does evil deeds.
ਨਾਤਾ ਧੋਤਾ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
nātā dhōtā thāi n pāī .
His cleansings and washings will not be approved.
ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
musalamān karē vadiāī .
The Muslim glorifies his own faith.
