ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਏ ॥
manamukh agiānī andhulē janam marah phir āvai jāē .
The ignorant self-willed manmukhs are blind. They are born, only to die again, and continue coming and going.
ਕਾਰਜ ਸਿਧਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਨੀ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਏ ॥
kāraj sidh n hōvanī ant gaiā pashutāē .
Their affairs are not resolved, and in the end, they depart, regretting and repenting.
ਜਿਸੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ॥
jis karam hōvai tis satigur milai sō har har nām dhiāē .
One who is blessed with the Lord's Grace, meets the True Guru; he alone meditates on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਜਨ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਨ੍ਹਿ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
nām ratē jan sadā sukh pāinh jan nānak tin bal jāē .1.
Imbued with the Naam, the humble servants of the Lord find a lasting peace; servant Nanak is a sacrifice to them. ||1||

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਜਗਿ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
āsā manasā jag mōhanī jin mōhiā sansār .
Hope and desire entice the world; they entice the whole universe.
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਜਮ ਕੇ ਚੀਰੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਹੈ ਜੇਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥
sabh kō jam kē chīrē vich hai jētā sabh ākār .
Everyone, and all that has been created, is under the domination of Death.
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੀ ਜਮੁ ਲਗਦਾ ਸੋ ਉਬਰੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੈ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
hukamī hī jam lagadā sō ubarai jis bakhasai karatār .
By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, Death seizes the mortal; he alone is saved, whom the Creator Lord forgives.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਏਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਤਾਂ ਤਰੈ ਜਾ ਛੋਡੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
nānak gur parasādī ēh man tānh tarai jā shōdai ahankār .
O Nanak, by Guru's Grace, this mortal swims across, if he abandons his ego.
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਰੇ ਨਿਰਾਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
āsā manasā mārē nirās hōi gur sabadī vīchār .2.
Conquer hope and desire, and remain unattached; contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2||

ਜਿਥੈ ਜਾਈਐ ਜਗਤ ਮਹਿ ਤਿਥੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਈ ॥
jithai jāīai jagat mah tithai har sāī .
Wherever I go in this world, I see the Lord there.
ਅਗੈ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਚਾ ਨਿਆਈ ॥
agai sabh āpē varatadā har sachā niāī .
In the world hereafter as well, the Lord, the True Judge Himself, is pervading and permeating everywhere.
ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ਕੇ ਮੁਹ ਫਿਟਕੀਅਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
kūriārā kē muh phitakīah sach bhagat vadiāī .
The faces of the false are cursed, while the true devotees are blessed with glorious greatness.
ਸਚੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚਾ ਨਿਆਉ ਹੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਛਾਈ ॥
sach sāhib sachā niāu hai sir nindak shāī .
True is the Lord and Master, and true is His justice. The heads of the slanderers are covered with ashes.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੫॥
jan nānak sach arādhiā guramukh sukh pāī .5.
Servant Nanak worships the True Lord in adoration; as Gurmukh, he finds peace. ||5||

Shalok, Third Mehl:
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਏਹ ਆਸਾ ਦੂਜੇ ਭਾਵ ਕੀ ਜੋ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
dhrig ēh āsā dūjē bhāv kī jō mōh māiā chit lāē .
Cursed are the hopes in the love of duality; they tie the consciousness to love and attachment to Maya.
ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਲ੍ਹਰਿ ਤਿਆਗਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
har sukh palhar tiāgiā nām visār dukh pāē .
One who forsakes the peace of the Lord in exchange for straw, and forgets the Naam, suffers in pain.
