ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਦੀਵਾ ਬਲੈ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
dīvā balai andhērā jāi .
When the lamp is lit, the darkness is dispelled;
ਬੇਦ ਪਾਠ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਪਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
bēd pāth mat pāpā khāi .
reading the Vedas, sinful intellect is destroyed.
ਉਗਵੈ ਸੂਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਚੰਦੁ ॥
ugavai sūr n jāpai chand .
When the sun rises, the moon is not visible.
ਜਹ ਗਿਆਨ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਮਿਟੰਤੁ ॥
jah giān pragās agiān mitant .
Wherever spiritual wisdom appears, ignorance is dispelled.
ਬੇਦ ਪਾਠ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ॥
bēd pāth sansār kī kār .
Reading the Vedas is the world's occupation;
ਪੜ੍ਹਿ ਪੜ੍ਹਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥
parh parh pandit karah bīchār .
the Pandits read them, study them and contemplate them.
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਭ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰ ॥
bin būjhē sabh hōi khuār .
Without understanding, all are ruined.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
nānak guramukh utaras pār .1.
O Nanak, the Gurmukh is carried across. ||1||
ਮਃ ੧ ॥
mah 1 .
First Mehl:
ਸਬਦੈ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੋ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
sabadai sād n āiō nām n lagō piār .
Those who do not savor the Word of the Shabad, do not love the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਰਸਨਾ ਫਿਕਾ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥
rasanā phikā bōlanā nit nit hōi khuār .
They speak insipidly with their tongues, and are continually disgraced.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
nānak paiai kirat kamāvanā kōi n mētanahār .2.
O Nanak, they act according to the karma of their past actions, which no one can erase. ||2||
ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:
ਜਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੋ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਏ ॥
j prabh sālāhē āpanā sō sōbhā pāē .
One who praises his God, receives honor.
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਚੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
haumai vichah dūr kar sach mann vasāē .
He drives out egotism from within himself, and enshrines the True Name within his mind.
ਸਚੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਰੈ ਸਚਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
sach bānī gun ucharai sachā sukh pāē .
Through the True Word of the Guru's Bani, he chants the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and finds true peace.
ਮੇਲੁ ਭਇਆ ਚਿਰੀ ਵਿਛੁੰਨਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
mēl bhaiā chirī vishunniā gur purakh milāē .
He is united with the Lord, after being separated for so long; the Guru, the Primal Being, unites him with the Lord.
ਮਨੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਇਵ ਸੁਧੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ॥੧੭॥
man mailā iv sudh hai har nām dhiāē .17.
In this way, his filthy mind is cleansed and purified, and he meditates on the Name of the Lord. ||17||
