ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਹਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ॥
ghar dar pāvai mahal nām piāriā .
He obtains his own home and mansion, by loving the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਉ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਵਾਰਿਆ ॥
guramukh pāiā nām hau gur kau vāriā .
As Gurmukh, I have obtained the Naam; I am a sacrifice to the Guru.
ਤੂ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰਿਆ ॥੧੬॥
tū āp savārah āp sirajanahāriā .16.
You Yourself embellish and adorn us, O Creator Lord. ||16||

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਜਿਨੀ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰਸੁ ਕੰਤ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਸਾਉ ॥
jinī n pāiō prēm ras kant n pāiō sāu .
Those who do not obtain the sublime essence, the love and delight of their Husband Lord,
ਸੁੰਞੇ ਘਰ ਕਾ ਪਾਹੁਣਾ ਜਿਉ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਉ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥
sunñē ghar kā pāhunā jiu āiā tiu jāu .1.
are like guests in a deserted house; they leave just as they have come, empty-handed. ||1||

First Mehl:
ਸਉ ਓਲਾਮ੍ਹੇ ਦਿਨੈ ਕੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਿਲਨ੍ਹਿ ਸਹੰਸ ॥
sau ōlāmhē dinai kē rātī milanh sahans .
He receives hundreds and thousands of reprimands, day and night;
ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਲਾਹਣੁ ਛਡਿ ਕੈ ਕਰੰਗੀ ਲਗਾ ਹੰਸੁ ॥
siphat salāhan shad kai karangī lagā hans .
the swan-soul has renounced the Lord's Praises, and attached itself to a rotting carcass.
ਫਿਟੁ ਇਵੇਹਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਿਤੁ ਖਾਇ ਵਧਾਇਆ ਪੇਟੁ ॥
phit ivēhā jīviā jit khāi vadhāiā pēt .
Cursed is that life, in which one only eats to fill his belly.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਭੋ ਦੁਸਮਨੁ ਹੇਤੁ ॥੨॥
nānak sachē nām vin sabhō dusaman hēt .2.
O Nanak, without the True Name, all one's friends turn to enemies. ||2||

ਢਾਢੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥
dhādhī gun gāvai nit janam savāriā .
The minstrel continually sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, to embellish his life.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਸਚਾ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿਆ ॥
guramukh sēv salāh sachā ur dhāriā .
The Gurmukh serves and praises the True Lord, enshrining Him within his heart.
